To All Participants:
The Rensselaer Intramural Sports Program provides the opportunity for students, faculty and staff of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to engage in individual and team activities in various skill levels.
Assumption of Risk Hold Harmless Agreement:
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute does not provide accident insurance coverage for injuries received by Intramural participants. Each participant should make sure he/she has coverage either through family policies or the student insurance plan. We cannot emphasize this point enough.
By registering a team, team captains assume the responsibility of that they shall make their teammates aware of the various risks associated with participating in the activity. Captain's that do not agree to take this responsibility will not be entered into the intramural leagues.
Participation in sporting and athletic activities involves certain inherent risks. These include, without limitation, the significant risk of serious personal injury or death and the significant risk of personal property damage or destruction, and hereby assume all risks and consequences associated with or arising in connection with such participation. Participants agree to indemnify and hold harmless the State of New York, the Board of Trustees of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and their employees and students, and all organizations involved in the coordination, hosting, staffing and contribution of equipment and supplies, and their agents, servants and employees from and against any and all claims, damages, actions, liability and expenses in connection with loss of life, personal injury and/or damage to property arising out of my participation in the intramural program.
Intramural Board:
The Intramural Board will consist of the Director of Intramurals, Assistant Director of Intramurals, and all the Intramural Sport Coordinators. They act as the governing board of the Intramural program and their decision regarding any aspect of the program shall be final. It is the responsibility of the Intramural Board to regulate the rules and policies in all sports.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Students -
All undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to participate in intramurals as long as you are currently enrolled in at full time status. Cross registered students are not permitted to play in Rensselaer Intramurals. Spouse, dependents, friends and relatives of Rensselaer faculty and staff are not eligible to compete in the Rensselaer Intramurals.
- Faculty and Staff -
All faculty and staff are eligible to participate in intramurals as long as you are currently working on campus and have a Rensselaer ID card. Spouse, dependents, friends and relatives of Rensselaer faculty and staff are not eligible to compete in the Rensselaer Intramurals.
- Alumni-
Alumni of Rensselaer are permitted to participate in the Red Hawk Open League intramural program provided they are members of the Let's Go Red booster club. Spouses, dependents, friends and relatives of Rensselaer alumni are not eligible to compete in any intramural program.
- IFC Members-
If an IFC member registers on a Red Hawk Open League Roster, he or she is not eligible to compete for his or her house team in that particular sport.
- Collegiate Athletes-
A member of varsity or junior varsity team is not eligible for competition in that sport after his or her name appears on the official team roster for a regular season contest.
He or she is ineligible to participate in that sport for the duration of the team's season unless released by the coach in writing to participate in Intramural sports. To be able to compete, the athlete must turn in this written release form to the Director of Intramurals.
Any varsity or junior varsity athlete may compete in any intramural sport while he or she is out of season.
Any student who participated on the varsity or junior varsity team sport MUST PLAY in the intramural A LEAGUE for that sport.
Sign-Up Procedures:
- If You Have A Team:
- Select a team captain
- On the Roster Due Date, have the captain come with the necessary fee and completed team roster to the '87 Gym Office (located near the '87 Football field).
- Make sure the captain attends the mandatory captain's meeting held in the Mueller Center classroom. If you miss the captians meeting your team will not be put on the schedule at all and you may run the risk of being dropped from the league if there are other teams on a waiting list at the meeting. If there is no waiting list then the captain must meet with the Intramural Coordinator or they will not be scheduled.
- Captains should make sure that all players on their team are registered for only one team.
- Captain should inform all their players of the intramural rules and policies pertaining to the sport.
- Captain should make sure all players on the team bring their Rensselaer Student ID card to all games.
- If You Do Not Have A Team:

Free Agents
There is no longer a form for Free Agents. If you want to play in a sport and do not have a team YOU MUST SHOW UP TO THE CAPTAINS MEETING. At the meeting we will either create a team for you or place you on a team. Please check our website for times and dates of each different captains meeting. ALL MEETINGS WILL BE HELD IN THE MUELLER CENTER CLASSROOM. NO ID NO PLAY:
- Each participant must bring their Rensselaer ID card to all games in order to participate.
- If your ID is lost or stolen it is your responsibility to replace it before your game. NO EXCEPTIONS
- Driver's license or class schedules will not be allowed
Assumed Name / Using Someone Else's ID Card:
- Anyone caught playing under an assumed name or using someone else's ID card will be ineligible to participate in intramurals for the remainder of the semester. A team penalty may also be imposed.
- Also the player who loaned out their ID card is also ineligible to participate for the remainder of the semester.
- Repeat occurrences will include other penalties with the possibility of a suspension period for a year.
Mutual Player Agreement:
- Teams may not play an ineligible person even by mutual agreement of both teams captains or individuals involved in the contest.
Investigation of Eligibility:
- The Intramural Department does not assume responsibility for investigating the eligibility of all participants, but will investigate any properly protested cases with regard to eligibility.
Individual Affiliation:
- NO INDIVIDUAL MAY COMPETE FOR MORE THAN ONE TEAM IN ANY INTRAMURAL SPORT. For example, you can not compete on two basketball teams even though they are playing in different leagues.
Team Transfers:
- A player may not change teams once they have played one game with the team they started the season with.
- The only way you can transfer teams is if the entire team disbands.
Ejected Player(s):
- Any player(s) ejected from a game may not return to that particular game.
- Before the player(s) are allowed to participate in future games, they must meet with the Intramural Coordinator.
Spectators:
- Teams are responsible for all spectators that come to watch them play. All spectators are subject to the policies and regulations of the Rensselaer Intramural Sport Program, the facilities where the games are played and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Forfeit:
- A forfeit occurs when a team fails to appear for a scheduled contest ten minutes after the scheduled starting time without making arrangements for postponement or fails to provide the minimum number of players required by the specific sport.
Minimum Number of Players:
- The minimum number of players required to start a contest is (1) less than the required number for that sport by forfeit time. (ie. 5on5 basketball- 4, Gym Hockey - 4, Softball - 8, Ice Hockey - 6, Soccer – 6, Volleyball - 4, All other sports require a full lineup.
Forfeit Penalty:
- If a team forfeits a contest the captain must meet with the Assistant Intramural Coordinator in order to be put back on the schedule.
Playoff Eligibility:
- Players must play in at least one regular season contest in order to be eligible for the playoffs.
- Teams must maintain a 2.0 sportsmanship average in order to be eligible for the playoffs.
- Once playoffs begin, teams must receive at least a 2.0 sportsmanship rating in order to advance to the next round of the playoffs.
Sportsmanship Rating
- The sportsmanship rating system is meant to assist officials, scorekeepers and supervisors in evaluating the sportsmanship of participants and spectators. The system will allow officials, scorekeepers and supervisors to rate teams and spectators on communication, respect for opponents and officials, and profanity/unsportsmanlike conduct.
- Teams will be rated on a 4-point scale. Four being excellent sportsmanship, and zero being poor. Teams will be rated at the conclusion of each game by the officials and scorekeepers and in some cases the supervisors.
- Teams must maintain a 2.0 sportsmanship average in order to be eligible for the playoffs.
- If a team forfeits a game, the team will receive a 0.0 sportsmanship rating for that game.
- Any team that has a player ejected can receive no higher than a 2.0 rating for that game.
- During playoffs, teams will be rated and must receive a 2.0 or higher rating in order to advance to the next round.
- Rating Scale:
- 4.0 - Shows excellent sportsmanship and cooperation with officials, scorekeepers and opponents.
- 3.0 - Team shows good sportsmanship and cooperation with officials, scorekeepers and oppenents. Team warned for minor infactions (profanity, etc.).
- 2.0 - Team repeatedly warned for minor infactions or player ejected.
- 1.0 - Player(s) or team are out of control. No cooperation with IM staff. Unsportsmanlike conduct. Spectators/fans are rude and abusive to IM staff and opponents.
- 0.0 - Team forfeits a game or shows general lack of respect for over all program and staff and for fighting. Teams receiving a 0.0 rating are subject to further disciplinary action.
- The team captain is the sole spokesman for his/her team in conferring with the officials and must assume the responsibility for the conduct of his/her players and spectators. Intramural Sports expects a high level of sportsmanship from its participants and verbal or physical abuse of its student employees will not be tolerated.
- Intramural Officials and Supervisors have the authority to remove from a game, without warning, any player who is playing in a dangerous manner, displaying un-sportsmanlike conduct, or shows evidence of drug or alcohol use. When a player has been ejected from a game, he/she must leave the area immediately. Players removed from a game by an official or supervisor are suspended indefinitely for ALL Intramural Sports and must personally seek reinstatement from the Intramural Coordinator by calling (518) 276-6556.
- When deemed appropriate or when injury or property damage results from the misconduct, the matter will be reported to the Office of the Intramural Director for further possible disciplinary action.

NOTES:
- ANY PLAYER EJECTED FROM A GAME IS INELIGIBLE FOR THE POST-SEASON GAME/TOURNAMENT FOR THAT SPORT.
- IF THERE IS A INCIDENT OF PLAYER EJECTION BY THE SAME TEAM IN THE SAME SEASON, THE TEAM IS INELIGIBLE FOR THE POST-SEASON PLAY/TOURNAMENT.
- IF THE EJECTION TAKES PLACE IN A POST-SEASON/TOURNAMENT GAME, THAT GAME WILL BE ENDED.
IN ADDITION:
- These are minimum suspensions, and may be extended at the discretion of the Director of Intramural Sports, the Assistant Director Intramural Sports and the Intramural Sports Coordinator.
- All suspensions are indefinite in length and apply to all intramural sports activities until the player seeks, and is granted, reinstatement from the Assistant Intramural Director and Intramural Sports Coordinator. An appointment must be made to seek reinstatement.
- The number of weeks and games applies to all intramural activities and is counted when intramural team sports leagues are played and the individual is on a team roster. Additionally, the suspension does not begin until the meeting date.
- Participants are subject to ejection from intramural events from the time they arrive at the game site to the time they leave.
- IM HINT: To avoid escalating a fight, players in the game should restrain their own teammates. Do not grab opponents to attempt to break up a fight.
Protests:
- If a team feels that an official has misrepresented a rule or suspect that their opponents are using an ineligible player, the team must lodge a protest immediately.
- The protest must be made by the team captain verbally to the official and the on-site supervisor and every effort should be made to resolve the problem at that time.
- If a team is dissatisfied with the on-site ruling, a formal protest must be filed.
- All formal protests must be made in writing and the protesting team should record the game situation (officials, score, time remaining, outs, etc.) and must be submitted to the '87 Gym Office no later than 5pm the following day.
- Ruling on protest will be made by the Intramural Board and the decision of the Director of Intramurals will be final.
- Protests MAY NOT be made on judgment calls (out/safe, in/out, block/charge, etc.).
Conduct of Participants and Spectators:
- The purpose of the Intramural Sports program is to provide exercise, diversion, and fun to participants in a relaxed, yet structured, environment.
- All actions and comments, whether to officials, supervisors, participants or spectators should be constructive, if offered at all.
The Following guidelines for participants and spectators should assist teams in reinforcing a sportsperson-like atmosphere:
- Participants and spectators are expected to behave in a cooperative, positive manner which contributes to the IM philosophy of the Spirit of Competition.
- Each team is responsible for the conduct of their team members and spectators before, during and after the contest.
- All vulgar, obscene, abusive, derogatory and demeaning comments or gestures create a hostile environment, generate ill-will and contribute to a negative IM experience. THIS BEHAVIOR WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
- All instances of unnecessary roughness, attempting to injure another person, threatening another person, provoking an altercation or fighting will result in severe disciplinary action.
- Participants and spectators are expected to comply with the request and directions of all IM personnel in a respectful pleasant manner.
- The consumption of alcoholic beverages or drugs are not allowed at IM activities. Person(s) will be asked to leave the facility.
- The role of the spectators is to provide support and encouragement which is beneficial to the participants, the game and the IM program.
- Spectators must remain in their designed areas and may not encroach on the playing area.
- Individuals and teams that violate these guidelines will be disciplined at the discretion of the Officials, Scorekeepers, Supervisors and the IM Director.
- Teams may be penalized for the actions of their spectators as well as their team members.
- The Intramural Sports program reserves the right to refuse service to any participant who violates any policy or procedure, or engages in any verbal and/or physical abuse of the Intramural Sports program staff or participants.
Fighting (3rd person in rule):
- Under no circumstances will fighting be tolerated
- If two players are caught fighting and a 3rd person jumps in, regardless of which team he/she is with, then the game is automatically declared a double forfeit for both teams and 0.0 sportsmanship rating are given.
Injuries:
- In the event of an injury during an Intramural activity:
- The on-site supervisor will assist the student, make a written report, determine the severity of the injury and call Public Safety at the emergency number 276-6111.
- In the case of a serious injury, emergency assistance will be called unless otherwise advised by the injured participant.
- In the case of a head or neck injury, the participant will not be allowed to participate in the rest of the game and the emergency number will be called.
