SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Rensselaer women's tennis team came off an extended break from action with little rust as the Engineers defeated Mount Holyoke, 7-2. RPI, which had not played since March 22, improves to 8-3 on the season.
The Engineers, who are ranked 19th in the latest ITA Regional Ranking, came out firing in the doubles, claiming all three. Sophomores
Casey Olsen (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) and
Amanda Alexander (Houston, Texas/HS for the Performing and Visual Arts) posted an 8-3 victory in the first flight.
Olsen carried her success into singles action as she battled with MHC's Nahrhee Han (Albertson, N.Y./Herricks) for a 7-5 (7-6), 9-7 victory in the first flight. Freshman
Emily Laurilliard (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) and junior
Christina Ciamarra (Southington, Conn./Newtown) - both of whom won in doubles - also picked up key victories for RPI. Laurilliard won 6-1, 6-3 in the second flight, while Ciamarra posted a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win in the third.
The Lyons return to action next weekend when they compete at the 2013 Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Vassar College. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday. RPI hosts Oneonta on Tuesday at 3pm.
