Box Score / Watch (RPI TV)

TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) scored three power play goals, including two in the third period, for a come-from-behind 3-3 tie and the Engineers won the shootout, 2-1, over the University of Prince Edward Island (PEI) in an exhibition game at the Houston Field House.

Trailing 3-2 early in the third period, RPI got goals from freshmen Jerry D'Amigo (Binghamton, NY/U.S. NTDP) and Marty O'Grady (London, ON/Wellington Dukes) two minutes apart mid-way through the stanza for the tie. D'Amigo scored from the bottom of the left circle off a pass from Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) at 12:15. O'Grady took a pass from Alex Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Langley Chiefs), who was behind the net, and scored from the slot at the 14:26 mark.

PEI opened a 1-0 lead at 10:25 of the first period when sophomore Jared Gomes (Brampton, ON/St. Michaels Majors) picked up a rebound of a Chad Locke (St. John's, NF/Summerside Capitals) shot and scored from close range. RPI goaltender Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) got a piece of the puck but could not prevent it from crossing the goal line. Jordan Knox (Skinners Pond, PE/Pictou County) was also credited with an assist.

The Panthers went ahead by two goals at 1:06 of the second period when sophomore Matt Carter (Mississauga, ON/Phoenix Roadrunners) deflected a Thomas Stryncl (Karlovy Vary/Brampton Battalion) right point slapshot past York.

The Engineers cut the deficit in half on a goal by freshman Brandon Pirri (Toronto, ON/Georgetown Raiders) at 13:46. With RPI on the power play, Tyler Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) dug the puck off the left end boards and passed it to D'Amigo, who was stationed just outside the left side of the crease. D'Amigo's shot was saved but the rebound went to Pirri, who roofed a backhanded shot just under the crossbar.

PEI went ahead 3-1 midway through the third period on a wrist shot goal from freshman Dylan Quaile (Toronto, ON/Trenton Devils) before RPI tied the game. In the shootout, the Engineers got goals from Pirri and Helfrich, while Gomes scored for the Panthers.

York finished with 13 saves in two periods, while freshman Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, PA/Topeka Roadrunners) stopped 10 shots in the third period and overtime. Wayne Savage (St. Thomas, ON/Toronto St. Michaels), a freshman, had 33 saves on the other end, including 14 in the first period.

Rensselaer opens the regular season on Thursday night at Massachusetts (7pm). The Engineers home opener is Saturday, October 10, at 7pm.
