League Tabs Two From Men's Soccer

Prom & Penny named top offensive, defensive performers

TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in men's soccer and two Rensselaer student athletes have been selected. Jabel Prom and Alex Penny have been named Offensive and Defensive Performer of the Week, respectively.

Prom, a senior forward from Sandy Spring, Md., led the 13th-ranked Engineers to a victory in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, notching the clubs only goal in a 1-0 win against the 20th-ranked Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday. He then recorded a team-best three shots in a narrow 1-0 loss to sixth-ranked Williams in a Second Round match on Sunday.

A graduate of Sherwood High School, Prom finished the season tied for the team lead with seven goals and had an assist for 15 points. He was third on the club with 31 shots, including a team-best 23 shots on goal. His two game-winning tallies were also tops on the team.

Penny, who hails from Northport, N.Y., went 1-1 in goal for the Engineers last week, recording one shutout, while playing all 180 minutes of the team's NCAA Tournament run. He stopped all five shots he faced in a 1-0 win over the Warriors, before making five saves against Williams.

A junior, Penny finished the season with a 13-3-2 record ranking 16th in the country with a 0.54 goals against average and 17th with an .877 save percentage. The Northport High School graduate also recorded a league-high 10 shutouts, earning Defensive Performer of the Week honors a league-best seven times.

The Engineers, under the direction of eighth-year head coach Adam Clinton, concluded their 2009 season with a 14-3-2 overall record, including a 5-1-1 mark in the Liberty League. The team was ranked as high as sixth in the nation on two occasions and was eighth in the country with a 0.51 team goals against average. RPI reached the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for first time since 1997.
