TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly men's and women's soccer weekly awards and three Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been recognized.
Alex Penny and
Tom Kelly were named the men's Defensive Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively, while
Shannon Maguire was the Rookie of the Week on the women's side.
Penny, a junior netminder out of Northport, N.Y., backstopped the Engineers to a 2-0-0 mark last week, stopping 10 shots while allowing just one goal in 180:00 minutes played. In a 2-1 victory at New Paltz, he made eight stops. Penny then earned his Liberty League-leading ninth shutout in a 4-0 win over Vassar, stopping two shots as RPI claimed the conference regular season title.
A former standout at Northport High School, Penny has now garnered Defensive Performer of the Week six times this season. As a starter in 15 games, he is 12-1-2 and leads the Liberty League in shutouts (9) and goals against average (0.39). He has allowed just six goals in 1388:55 minutes and has a .905 save percentage.
An exchange student from Shrewsbury, England, Kelly tallied a goal and two assists on four shots last week. He recorded an assist in the win at New Paltz and then helped RPI secure the conference's regular season title, scoring the eventual game-winning goal and assisting on another in the victory over the Brewers.
This is the third Rookie of the Week for the former Shrewsbury School standout, who is third on the team in scoring with 12 points on five goals and two assists through 14 games. A midfielder, he also has 30 shots to his credit (15 on goal) with a team-best two game-winning tallies.
Maguire, a forward who hails from Randolph, N.J., powered RPI to a 2-0-0 record last week, tallying three goals on a team-best seven shots (five on goal). She scored the game's lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Hartwick, posting a game-best five shots. Maguire then tallied the eventual game-winner and added a second later in the contest to lead the Engineers to a 5-0 win over Utica.
A former standout at Randolph High School, this is the third weekly honor for Maguire, who leads the Engineers in scoring with 12 goals and an assist for 25 points in 18 games. She also has a team-best 65 shots (34 on goal) with a team-high five game-winning markers out of six season victories. Maguire, who leads the Liberty League in goals and points, is also second in the conference in several categories, including goals per game (0.67 average).
The men's soccer team (13-1-2; 5-1-1 Liberty League), which won the Liberty League regular season title to earn the first-seed in the league tournament, hosts fourth-seeded Union in the semi-finals on Wednesday with kick-off set for 7:30pm. The women's soccer team concluded its season with a 6-11-1 overall record, including 1-6-0 in the Liberty League.
