TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore netminder Kyle Rank (Islip, NY/Markham Waxers) made 49 saves to lead the Bentley men’s hockey team to a 2-2 overtime tie with Lake Superior State in the consolation game of the 59th-Annual Rensselaer Holiday Tournament, this afternoon at the Houston Field House. Taking third place with the shootout win, the Falcons move to 5-6-3 on the season, while the Lakers are now 6-7-3.
Rank (2-5-2) recorded 19 of his saves in the second period and six in the extra frame to earn the tie. Lake Superior junior goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson (West Roxbury, MA) turned 20 saves to move to 6-6-3 on the year.
Lake Superior State overcame a two-goal deficit to pull the game even through two periods of play. After a scoreless third and overtime, Bentley converted its first two shootout attempts, and Rank stopped two Lakers tries to seal the consolation game victory.
Freshman Joe Campanelli (Pierrefonds, PQ/Westminster Prep) sent a pass across the slot to Anders Olson (Edina, MN/Williams Lake Timberwolves), who buried a one-timer into a wide open cage to give Bentley a 1-0 lead at 8:12 of the first period.
The Falcons lead expanded to 2-0 on a goal by freshman Brandon Bahnemann (Rochester, MN/Springfield Jr. Blues) at 16:12 of the opening stanza. Bahnemann’s attempted wrap-around was saved initially by Mahoney-Wilson, but a second effort pushed the puck over the goal line. Assists went to classmates Jordy Trottier (Bozeman, MB/Mhoning Valley Phantoms) and Brett Hartung (Tallahassee, FL/Wichita Falls Wildcats)
Lakers’ junior defenseman Dillin Stonehouse (Elkhorn, MB) brought the game to within a goal (2-1), just 26 seconds into the second period. A delayed penalty allowed Lake Superior to bring out an extra skater, freeing up Stonehouse for the shot from the point. Seniors John Scrymgeour (Pickering, ON) and Brad Cooper (Coppell, TX) earned helpers on Stonehouse’s first goal of the season.
Sophomore Dan Barczuk (Livonia, MI) netted the equalizing goal at 2:27 of the second on the power-play, when he picked up a rebound in the low slot and slammed it home. Assists on Barczuk’s first tally of the year went to juniors Chad Nehring (Springside, SK) and Rick Schofield (Pickering, ON).
The Falcons visit Canisius next weekend for a two-game series. The Lakers travel to Bowling Green on Friday and Saturday for a two-game set.
