TROY, N.Y. – The 2009 NSCAA/Mondo Senior College Men's Regional Coach of the Year honors have been announced and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) head coach
Adam Clinton was recognized as the All-East Regional Coach of the Year. He is now eligible for National Coach of the Year honors.
Clinton, who is in his eighth season at the helm of the Engineers, led the team to a 14-3-2 record and a first-place finish in the Liberty League standings with a 5-1-1 record. In addition to winning the conference's regular season title, the squad advanced to its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Liberty League Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year, Clinton's squad ranked among the nation's leaders in several categories, including eighth in goals against average (0.51) and save percentage (.880) and 18th in shutout percentage (0.58). RPI also lead the Liberty League in seven defensive categories, including fewest goals allowed (10), fewest points allowed (1.37 per game) and shutouts (10).
Clinton coached nine All-Liberty League selections in 2009, including senior captain and NSCAA All-American
Lincoln Field. Three student-athletes were named to the All-East Regional team, while senior forward
Sean Fleury garnered the program's first National Academic All-America honor since 2005.
In his career at Rensselaer, Clinton has posted an overall record of 75-53-15. His teams have participated in post-season play in five of the last six seasons, including back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009. His team's also captured ECAC Tournament titles in 2005 and 2007. In addition to 36 All-League selections, Clinton has coached five National Academic All-Americans, nine Academic All-District honorees and eight All-Region selections.
Prior to coaching at Rensselaer, Clinton was an assistant at the University of Albany for one season. He was the head coach at Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) for one year and has served as an assistant at nearby Union and Skidmore Colleges. Clinton has also been a head coach on the professional level, leading the Capital District Alley Cats of the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues from 1997-98.
A native of Clifton Park, N.Y., Clinton played soccer at both HVCC and Keene State College in New Hampshire. At HVCC, he was the team's MVP and name All-Region. At Keene, Clinton was the captain of the nationally-ranked Division II program. He also played professionally for the New York Kick in the National Professional Soccer Indoor League.
