TROY, N.Y. – The final men's soccer national rankings for 2009 have been released and Rensselaer finished in the top 25 in both major polls. The Engineers were ranked 19th by D3Soccer.com and 21st by the NSCAA.

Rensselaer, which finished 14-3-2 overall and first in the Liberty League with a record of 5-1-1, had one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2009. Led by head coach Adam Clinton, the Engineers were among the national leaders in a number of categories, including eighth in team goals against average (0.51) and save percentage (.880). The squad also led the Liberty League in seven defensive categories, including fewest goals allowed (10), fewest points allowed (1.37 per game) and shutouts (10).

Individually, the team earned a number of accolades at seasons’ end. Clinton was named the Liberty League Coach of the Year for the second straight season, while also garnering All-East Region Coach of the Year recognition. He is now a National Coach of the Year candidate.

Nine student-athletes were named to year-end All-Liberty League Teams, including senior midfielder and NSCAA All-American Lincoln Field (Contoocook, NH/Hopkinton), who led the team in scoring with 18 points on a team-best seven goals and four assists. A captain, he was also tops on the squad in game-winning tallies (2), penalty kicks (4 for 6) and shots (41).

Field was one of three members of the Engineers’ squad to earn All-East Region honors, joining classmate Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD/Sherwood) and sophomore Brad Shelofsky (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena).

Academically, senior forward Sean Fleury (Princeton, MA/Wachusett Regional) was named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American, and both he and Shelofsky were Academic All-District selections.
