TROY, N.Y. – The 2009 ECAC Division III Upstate Men's Soccer All-Star Teams have been announced and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes
Alex Penny and
Lincoln Field have been selected. Penny was named to the First Team, while Field garnered Second Team recognition.
Penny, a junior who hails from Northport, N.Y., started 18 games in goal for the Engineers, posting a 13-3-2 record. In 1671:54 minutes, he had a 0.54 goals against average with a .877 save percentage. Ranking 10th and 14th-nationally in goals against average and save percentage, respectively, Penny also led the Liberty League in shutouts (10) and GAA.
The former Northport High School standout, who was an All-Liberty League First Team selection this year, helped the Engineers rank among the nation's leaders in several categories, including eighth in goals against average (0.54) and save percentage (.880) and 18th in shutout percentage (0.58).
In his career, Penny has posted a record of 33-12-5 in 54 appearances. He has 27 shutouts to his credit during that time and has backstopped the Engineers to three straight playoff appearances, including the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons.
A native of Contoocook, N.H., Field led the team in scoring with 18 points on a team-best seven goals and four assists. A senior midfielder and captain, he was also tops on the squad in game-winning tallies (2), penalty kicks (4-6) and shots (41).
Field, who is a two-time All-Liberty League First Team selection in his career, finished fourth in the conference in points (0.95 per game average) and fifth in goals (0.37 average). He was also sixth in shots (2.16 per contest).
The Hopkinton High School graduate played in 73 games during his career, posting 16 goals and seven assists for 39 points. In addition to leading the team to the ECAC Upstate Tournament title in 2007, Field helped Rensselaer post back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2008 & 2009, including a second round showing this season.
As a junior, Field led the team with five goals and an assist for a team-best 11 points as a starter in 18 games. He started all 20 games in his sophomore season, posting two goals and an assist for five points and earned Most Outstanding Player honors as the Engineers won the ECAC Upstate Championship.
Rensselaer, which won the Liberty League regular season title, concluded its season with a 14-3-2 record and a 5-1-1 conference mark.
