Session II Results

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Session II at the 2009 Liberty League Championships is in the books and the Rensselaer men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams continue to hold strong heading into the final session. The men remain in second place, while the women moved from third to second with a number of solid performances.

The Engineers women, who had tallied 155 points through the first session on Friday, moved past Union College in Saturday’s morning session with a total of 426 to the Dutchwomen’s 392. Keying the move up the standings for RPI was a 1-2-3 finish in the 100-butterfly. Winning the event was rookie Mairead Lyons (Leominster, MA/Notre Dame Academy), who finished in a time of 1:00.76. In second was sophomore captain Carly Antonucci (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central), who recorded a time of 1:01.04, while freshman Christina Provenza (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) was third with a mark of 1:01.12.

Also finishing well on the day was rookie Tina Belletete (Winchendon, MA/Gardner), who followed up her two win performance in Session I, with a win in the 1650-freestyle. Her time of 18:02.48 was also a Liberty League record, besting the previous time by nearly seven seconds (18:09.82). It was also the first conference record to fall at the meet.

On the men’s side, the Engineers continued to hold strong against the host and meet leader Rochester. RPI has 521 points entering the third session, while the Yellow Jackets have 613 points. Pacing the effort for the men in the morning session was freshman Ben LeRose (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette), who won the 100-fly in a time of 53.08.

Also claiming victory for the Engineers was junior Julian Schott (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan), who won the 100-breaststroke with a time of 59.87.

The third and final session of this year’s conference championship begins at 4pm.
