Day One Results

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The 2009 Liberty League Swimming & Diving Championships got underway this afternoon and through the first five events, the Rensselaer men's and women's teams sit in second and third, respectively. Host Rochester currently leads the meet on both sides heading into day two.

The Engineers men, who trail the host Yellowjackets by just 23 points (228-205), were paced to second in day one by the efforts of multiple relay victories. The quartet of Ben LeRose, Brian Roth, Luke Flanagan and Julian Schott led the way in both wins, claiming first place in the 200-freestyle relay (1:28.28) and the 400-medley relay (3:36.78).

LeRose, who continues to have an outstanding rookie season, also finished second in the 200-IM (2:00.47). Schott was third in the 50-free (22.19), while Kevin Ehrlich posted third in the 500-free (4:57.57).

On the women's side, rookies Tina Belletete and Mairead Lyons had solid performances. Belletete claimed victory in the 500-free (5:19.54), while Lyons was runner-up in the same event (5:22.74). Both helped the 400-medley relay team to victory (4:10.58).

The 1-meter diving results, which were submitted too late to make it into the day's scoring, were also revealed and senior Kelsey Manley claimed victory in the event (365.85 points).  Junior Grace Fitzgerald also finished well, posting third (332.75).

The Engineers women currently sit in third place with 155 points, behind host Rochester (278) and Union (200).

Both squads return to action on Saturday morning in Session II of the championships, beginning at 9am. The meet concludes tomorrow at 4pm in Session III.
