Day One Results
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The 2009 Liberty League Swimming & Diving Championships got underway this afternoon and through the first five events, the Rensselaer men's and women's teams sit in second and third, respectively. Host Rochester currently leads the meet on both sides heading into day two.
The Engineers men, who trail the host Yellowjackets by just 23 points (228-205), were paced to second in day one by the efforts of multiple relay victories. The quartet of
Ben LeRose,
Brian Roth,
Luke Flanagan and
Julian Schott led the way in both wins, claiming first place in the 200-freestyle relay (1:28.28) and the 400-medley relay (3:36.78).
LeRose, who continues to have an outstanding rookie season, also finished second in the 200-IM (2:00.47). Schott was third in the 50-free (22.19), while
Kevin Ehrlich posted third in the 500-free (4:57.57).
On the women's side, rookies
Tina Belletete and
Mairead Lyons had solid performances. Belletete claimed victory in the 500-free (5:19.54), while Lyons was runner-up in the same event (5:22.74). Both helped the 400-medley relay team to victory (4:10.58).
The Engineers women currently sit in third place with 155 points, behind host Rochester (278) and Union (200).
Both squads return to action on Saturday morning in Session II of the championships, beginning at 9am. The meet concludes tomorrow at 4pm in Session III.
