Track & Field Opens 2010 Season in NYC

Engineers take part in the non-scoring NYC Gotham Cup

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute men's and women's indoor track & field teams kicked off their 2010 season on Friday, competing in the NYC Gotham Cup at the 168th Street Armory. Both teams had solid outings at the non-team scoring meet as several student-athletes finished first in their events.

Leading the men's effort was senior Justin Metzger (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), who finished first in the men's seeded pole vault event, with a score of 4.60 meters. Classmate Casey Lewis (Springvale, ME/Sanford) also finished well in the same event, posting fourth overall with a mark of 4.15 meters.

Junior Garrett Harms (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport) finished third overall in the unseeded pole vault event with a height of 3.05 meters, which was good for third, while also posting eighth in the unseeded shot put event (11.08 meters).

Rounding out the solid effort for the Engineers' men was senior Mike Cipollone (Swan Point, MD/McDonough), who placed fifth in the high jump (1.96 meters), and junior Brian Debronsky (Beacon, NY/Beacon), who was fifth in the unseeded 1-mile event with a time of 4:27.75.

On the women's side, junior Jenna Covill (Seekonk, MA / Seekonk) was first overall in the unseeded shot put event, posting a distance of 11.17 meters. Classmate Connor Ahlborn (Falls Church, VA/The Peddie School) was second in the same event with a mark of 11.09 meters.

Freshman Marie Ferro (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) finished fifth in the 1-mile with a time of 5:20.98, while sophomore Lindsay Dubas (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) was sixth in the high jump (1.50 meters) and seventh in the triple jump (10.07 meters).

Rensselaer is back in action next weekend when they compete in meets on Friday and Saturday. The Engineers are back in New York City to compete in the Albany Classic at the 168th Street Armory on Friday before heading to Middletown, Conn., on Saturday for the Wesleyan Invitational.
