TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in women's basketball and men's track & field and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes
Whitney Coleman and
Justin Metzger were recognized. Coleman was named the women's Guard of the Week, while Metzger earned Field Performer of the Week in men's track & field.
Coleman, a graduate student who hails from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., led the Engineers to a 2-0 record last week, averaging a double-double of 26.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in a team-best 35.0 minutes. She went 20 for 39 (51.3%) from the floor, adding seven assists, a block and two steals.
In a 79-64 win at St. Lawrence, Coleman posted a game-best 25 points and eight rebounds with three assists, a block and a steal. She wrapped up the weekend with a double-double of 27 points and 12 rebounds with four assists in a 71-59 victory at Clarkson.
This is the third consecutive and fifth overall Guard of the Week for Coleman, who leads the squad with 18.2 points and 8.5 rebounds through 13 games. She has a team-best 54 assists and 29 steals to go along with 10 blocks, while averaging 31.0 minutes per contest. Coleman leads the Liberty League in scoring and is third in rebounding. She is also second in the conference in assists (4.15 per game).
Metzger, a senior pole vaulter from Clifton Park, N.Y., was recognized with Field Performer of the Week after winning the seeded pole vault event with a mark of 4.60 meters at the season-opening NYC Gotham Cup.
A former standout at Shenendehowa High School, Metzger is coming off his most successful indoor season to date, winning both the Liberty League and NYSCTC pole vault titles in 2009. He earned National All-America status in his event after finishing sixth overall at the NCAA Championships with a school record mark of 4.92 meters. Metzger is also a two-time outdoor conference champion in the pole vault.
The women's basketball team (7-6; 2-0 Liberty League) is back on the court on Tuesday, hosting Vassar at 6pm at East Campus Arena. The Engineers' track & field teams are in action this weekend, competing at the Albany Classic in NYC on Friday before traveling to Middletown, Conn., for the Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday.
