TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in men's track & field and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes
Austin Drexler and
Justin Metzger were recognized as the men's Track and Field Performers of the Week, respectively.
A sophomore out of Houston, Texas, Drexler earned his first Track Performer of the Week after finished top-ten in each of the three events he competed in at the non-scoring Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday. He posted fourth in the 55-dash with a time of 6.69 and was ninth in the 200-dash with a mark of 23.40. Drexler rounded out the meet with a fifth place finish in the long jump (5.86 meters).
The St. Thomas High School graduate has competed in all three meets this season and looks to build off a solid rookie campaign in which he performed well at the Liberty League Outdoor Championships. He helped RPI claim the 2009 title after finishing third in both the 100-dash and the high jump.
Drexler was a two-year member of the track & field teams during his high school career, captaining the team in his senior season. He was also a member of the varsity soccer team for one year.
A senior from Clifton Park, N.Y., Metzger earned his second straight weekly award after posting a season's-best and NCAA provisional mark of 4.80 meters to finish third in the pole vault at the multi-divisional Great Dane Classic.
The former standout at Shenendehowa High School standout has continued his success from the 2009 season, winning the pole vault event with a mark of 4.60 meters at the Engineers first meet of the season – the NYC Gotham Cup.
Metzger is coming off his most successful indoor season to date, winning both the Liberty League and NYSCTC pole vault titles in 2009. He earned National All-America status in his event after finishing sixth overall at the NCAA Championships with a school record mark of 4.92 meters. Metzger is also a two-time outdoor conference champion in the pole vault.
The track & field teams are back in action this weekend, when they head to Hamilton, N.Y., to compete in the Class of '32 Invitational at Colgate University.
