LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Freshman Mat Bodie scored with just 30 seconds remaining in regulation and the Union College men's hockey team came-from-behind to tie Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 3-3, at the Halloween Classic at Herb Brooks Rink. With the draw, the 20th-ranked Engineers move to 3-1-3, while the 16th-ranked Dutchmen are now 5-1-2.
Facing a 3-2 deficit late in the third period, the Dutchmen tied it up as Bodie (East St. Paul, Man. / Powell River Kings) collected the puck from sophomore Jeremy Welsh (Bayfield, ON / Oakville Blades), sending it past RPI netminder
Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) to send it into overtime.
Both goaltenders proved solid in the extra session as York finished with 17 stops, while Union's Keith Kincaid (Farmingville, NY / St. Louis Bandits) made 25 saves.
Union jumped out to the 2-0 advantage in the opening frame as sophomore Greg Coburn (Shaunavon, SK / Yorkton Terriers) tallied at 8:01 off a feed from senior Adam Presizniuk (Calgary, AB / Powell River Kings).
Presizniuk then made it a two-goal advantage for the Dutchmen as he scored past York on the power play with the assists going to Coburn and senior John Simpson (Boxborough, MA / Lawrence Academy) at 13:26.
RPI sophomore
Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY / Indiana Ice) cut the deficit for the Engineers in the second stanza after his wrist shot from the top of the slot blasted past Kincaid at 15:39.
In the third period, the Engineers mounted a huge comeback as sophomore #C.J. Lee# (Staten Island, NY/ Green Bay Gamblers) backhanded a shot past Kincaid off a pass from the neutral zone by senior
Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) at 10:50. Freshman
Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) was credited with the second assist.
Polacek then set up Rensselaer's third goal after taking a shot from the middle slot which was saved by Kincaid. Senior
Tyler Helfrich (Calgary, AB / Prince George Spruce Kings), who assisted on Bailen's second period tally, was there at the side of then to punch in the rebound just 11 seconds after Lee's tally. Senior defender
Jeff Foss (Moorhead, MN/Moorhead) earned the second helper on Helfrich's goal.
Union went 2 for 3 on the power play, while the Engineers were 0 for 3 with the man-advantage.
The Engineers are back in action next weekend, opening their ECAC Hockey schedule at Dartmouth and Harvard on Friday and Saturday. The Dutchmen face Harvard and then Dartmouth the following day. All four contests will begin at 7pm.
