SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -
Blake Adams scored in the sixth shootout session to lift RPI to a 5-4 shootout win over Union after the 0-0 Liberty League Men's Soccer Semifinal Game at College Park Wednesday night.
With the victory, the third seeded Engineers improve to 10-4-4 and advance to Saturday's Championship Game at St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. The Dutchmen finish the season with a record of 10-6-2.
Union had a 21-12 shot advantage, including 21-9 after regulation, yet neither team could score in the two 10 minute extra sessions to send the game to the shootout.
In the first shootout, Union goalkeeper Adam Marguilies made a diving save to his left off a shot by
Brad Shelofsky, and Dutchman Chris Santangelo scored. In the top of the next three sessions, RPI had scores from
Andrew Tambasco,
Benjamin Poser and
Jared Doolan, and Union scored in the bottom of those sessions with goals by Sebastiaan Jansen, Teddy Steen and Mark Zeyak.
In the fifth session, RPI tied the shootout when
Adam Updegrove scored. Union had a chance to win it in the bottom of the session but RPI goalkeeper
Alex Penny dove to his left to save the contest and force it to an extra, sixth session. Adams scored, but in the bottom of that session, Union's John Manna saw his shot go high over the net and RPI had the victory.
In the first overtime, RPI had a great opportunity at 92:58 but Nick Hoberman was behind Margulies and made the defensive stop off Tambasco's shot. RPI's
Zach Fane had a shot off a free kick at 99:13, in tight on the right post, but Union's Margulies was there for the save. RPI outshot Union, 3-0 in the first overtime. Late in the second OT, the Engineers had back to back shots by Doolan and Updegrove past the 109 minute mark, but Margulies made both stops.
Union's Sahr Nyuma could have put the Dutchmen on the board at 79:46 of regulation, but his shot nailed the crossbar. Union outshot the Engineers, 14-0 in the second half. The Dutchmen had a 6-4 advantage in shots in the first half.
Union had eight corners to RPI's three. Margulies made six saves while Penny stopped eight.
