TROY, N.Y. - The 2010 ESPN Academic All-District 1 College Division Men's Soccer teams have been announced and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes Brad Shelofsky and Kyle Kreitman have been selected to the First and Second Teams, respectively. Shelofsky, a junior, is now eligible for National Academic All-America consideration.
Shelofsky, a native of Rochester, N.Y., is a mechanical engineering major with a minor in management & technology. He has a 3.91 cumulative grade point average. A center back and team captain, he has started all 17 of the team's games, and has helped anchor a defense that has recorded a conference-best nine shutouts.
The Greece Athena High School graduate, who is also a two-time conference Defensive Performer of the Week selection this season, has helped the Engineers defense hold its opponents to just 0.71 goals per contest. RPI currently leads the Liberty League in shots allowed per game (8.12) and shutouts (9), while ranking second in the conference in shots on goal allowed per contest (3.88), goal allowed (12), goals against average (0.67) and points allowed (2.0).
Shelofsky, who is a multiple Dean's List selection and a Liberty League All-Academic honoree, is a recipient of the Monroe Professional Engineering Society Scholarship and a member of numerous honor societies within his field of study, including Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma. A 2009 Academic All-District Second Team selection who currently ranks in the top five percent of his class (1,100 students), he has interned with the Eastman Kodak Company, Mainstream Engineering Corportation and volunteers his time at area grade schools.
A senior left back from Norwood, N.J., Kreitman is a biochemistry and biophysics major with a minor in general psychology. Carrying a 3.68 cumulative GPA, he has started 15 games this season. Like Shelofsky, he has helped anchor an RPI defense that has carried the Engineers back into the Liberty League Semifinals for the third straight season. Rensselaer has surrendered just 12 goals this season, while leading the league in shutouts and is second in a number of defensive categories.
The Northern Valley Old Tappan High School graduate has played in 35 career games with RPI posting a 42-18-9 record in that time. He has helped the Engineers to a 9-4-4 record this season, including a 4-1-2 mark in the Liberty League. During his tenure at Rensselaer, Kreitman has helped the Engineers to the 2009 Liberty League regular season title, the 2009 & 2008 NCAA Tournament and the 2007 ECAC Championship title.
A multiple Dean's List and Liberty League All-Academic selection, Kreitman has worked as a bioenergetics lab assistant and is the recipient of the Rensselaer Merit Scholarsip and the Rensselaer Leadership Award. In addition to his work in the classroom and on the field, he has volunteered his time as a soccer instructor for underprivileged kids in both Troy, NY and Newark, NJ.
In order to be eligible for academic honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). He must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his current institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at their current institution.
