ITHACA, N.Y. – Six members of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) track & field teams competed in the pentathlon at Cornell University on Sunday, led by a second-place finish by junior
Garrett Harms. The first round of the NYSCTC Championships, points earned by individuals during the pentathlon will be applied to the overall team score to next weekend's State Meet.
Harms (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport), who finished fourth in last year’s competition, posted his best-ever finish with 3,236 points. He finished just ten points behind the first-place finisher and earns eight points for the RPI men toward next week's meet. Among the highlights for Harms was a second place finish in the shot put (10.44 meters), along with runner-up in the 1000-run (2:47.91).
Also competing for the cherry and white was sophomore
Alex Morin (Mendon, MA/Nimpuc Regional), who finished fifth with 3,085 points. He finished first in the shot put with a mark of 10.64 meters and also posted third in the 55-m hurdles (8.21). Rookie
David Kastner (West Islip, NY/West Islip) also had a solid outing at this year’s meet, placing sixth overall with 3,014 points.
Highlights from his efforts include a second-place finish in the 55-m hurdles (8.12) and fourth in the shot put (9.68 meters). Rounding out the men’s side was freshman
Kieran Davis (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central), who was 13th with 2,756 points.
Rookie
Lindsey Rappleyea (Colts Neck, NJ/High Technology/Colts Neck) paced the RPI women, finishing fifth in a field of 14, with a score of 2,696 points. She earned four points toward the team score next weekend. Her top finish in the five-event meet came in the long jump, where she was third overall with a mark of 5.00 meters.
Also finishing solid was junior
Missy Steciuk (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes), who was eighth with a score of 2,469. She earned a point for Rensselaer, highlighted by seventh-place finishes in the 55-m hurdles (9.87) and the shot put (7.92 meters).
The men’s and women’s squads are back in action next weekend when they compete in the NYSCTC Indoor Championships, hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology. Action begins on Friday and continues through to Saturday.
