Day One Results
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After the first day of action at the NYSCTC Indoor Championships, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's track & field teams are in excellent position. Behind a number of solid performances, both the Engineers men and women sit in second place of nine competing teams.
Leading the men's team were seniors
Erik Whiting (Fultonville, NY/Fultonville-Fonda) and
Mike Cipollone (Swan Point, MD/McDonough), who each captured the state title in their respective events. Whiting won the men's weight throw with a distance of 15.33 meters (50-03.50), while Cipollone claimed his second consecutive state indoor high jump title with a mark of 1.93 meters (6-4.00).
The Distance Medley Relay team of
Patrick Cavanaugh (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire),
Joshua Fallon (Pembroke, NH/Pembroke Academy),
Zach Harper (Plainville, CT/Plainville) and
Jeff Corelli (Latham, NY/Shaker) also performed well, finishing sixth overall in a time of 10:44.28.
Sophomore
Austin Drexler (Houston, TX/St. Thomas) finished sixth in the long jump with a distance of 6.53 meters (21-05.25) and also helped the 4x200 relay team to third in a time of 1:32.09. Other members of the relay squad included
Kyle Barden (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill),
Nick Jones (West Covina, CA/South Hills) and
John Scanlon (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth Regional).
On the women's side, rookie
Marie Ferro (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) finished second overall in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:31.76. She was the top freshman finisher in the event, which also saw junior
Christine Koch (Seaford, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) place fifth in the same event with a time of 18:44.10.
Senior
Tracey Knoop (North Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) finished third in the high jump with a distance of 1.58 meters (5-02.25), while rookie
Lindsey Rappleyea (Colts Neck, NJ/High Technology/Colts Neck) was sixth in the same event with a mark of 1.48m (4-10.25).
Sophomore
Morgan Danner (McLean, VA/Langley) was fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.34 meters (17-06.25), while junior
Jenna Covill (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) was sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 12.46 meters (40-10.50).
Danner also helped the 4x200 relay team to fourth in a time of 1:50.01. Also part of the foursome was
Cassie Fortini (Sandown, NH/Timberlane),
Paula Lobaccaro (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) and
Rachel Guillot (Morrisville, VT/Peoples Academy).
