Engineers men finish first of nine to claim the title; Women post third of nine teams

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The 2010 NYSCTC Indoor Championships came to a close on Saturday and after 21 events scored, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team were named this year's champions. The Engineers posted 159 points to win the meet, finishing ten points ahead of Liberty League-rival St. Lawrence. On the women's side, RPI was third of nine teams, also placing first among conference institutions.

Additionally, Rensselaer head coach Colin Tory was named the State Meet Men's Coach of the Year.  It marks the third time in his career that he has earned the distinction at the Indoor Championships, also awarded top coaching honors in 2004 and 2005.

The men were paced to victory by several first-place finishes, including senior captain Mike Zampi (Walpole, MA/Walpole), who won the 1000-run in a time of 2:33.81. Junior Alec Marshall (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) also won at this year's meet, claiming the 55-meter hurdle title in a time of 7.85.

Sophomore Austin Drexler (Houston, TX/St. Thomas) also had an outstanding effort, placing second in both the 200-dash with a time of 22.72 and the 55-dash with a mark of 6.61. Senior Kyle Barden (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) also helped pace the effort, finishing fourth in the 200-dash (23.02) and third in the 400-dash (50.29).

Pole vaulter Justin Metzger (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was second in the pole vault with a height of 4.70 meters (15-05.00), while the 4x800 relay team of Zampi, Brandon Kieft (Essex Jct., VT/Essex), Jarrett Kunze (Robbinsville, NJ/The Peddie School) and Nathan Marsan (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) placed third overall with a time of 8:11.34.

On the women's side, senior Erin Kyle (Keene, NH/Keene) was victorious in the 3000-m run with a time of 10:42.55. Rookie Marie Ferro (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) finished fifth in the same event, posting a time of 10:45.80.

Senior Cassie Fortini (Sandown, NH/Timberlane) won the 400-dash title with a mark of 60.38, while classmate Rachel Guillot (Morrisville, VT/Peoples Academy) was third in the 500-dash with a time of 1:21.08. Both Fortini and Guillot, along with Kristen Capaldi (North Providence, RI/LaSalle Academy) and Olivia vonNieda (Ephrata, PA/Lancaster Catholic) also ran on the 4x400 relay team, claiming second with a time of 4:10.02.

Also performing well in the relay events was the 4x800 squad of Julie Campbell (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area), Stephanie Bardon (Olney, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel), Ariel Mingrone (Shelton, CT/Shelton) and Danielle Cohen (Cranston, RI/Cranston East), which finished fourth in a time of 10:05.85.

Winning the meet on the women's side was Ithaca College, which posted 271 points. Rochester was second with 178.50 points, while the Engineers rounded out the top three with 123 points.

Both squads return to action next weekend as select qualifiers from throughout the season compete at the ECAC Indoor Championships, hosted by Smith College. Action begins on Friday and runs through Saturday.
