van der Bliek Garners Top Weekly ECAC Hockey Goalie Honor

Junior standout earns ECACH Goalie of the Week for the second time this season

Sonja van der Bliek
TROY, N.Y. – ECAC Hockey has announced its weekly women's ice hockey award winners for the week ending February 28 and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Sonja van der Bliek was named the Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season. Also recognized was Alisa Harrison, who was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.

A junior out of Toronto, Ont., van der Bliek stopped 98 of the 101 shots she faced last week as the Engineers won a best-of-three quarterfinals series against Quinnipiac, 2 games to 1. Allowing just three goals in 293:18 minutes of action, she posted a 0.61 goals against average and a .970 save percentage on the weekend.

Among the highlights was a 49-save effort on Sunday, as RPI defeated the Bobcats, 2-1, in five overtimes to win the series in what was the longest game in NCAA hockey history. She also stopped 33 shots in Friday's 2-1 double-OT loss, and made 16 stops in a 1-0 victory in game two, earning her seventh shutout of the season and the 16th of her career, which is a school record.

This is the fifth Goaltender of the Week honor for van der Bliek in her career. She has appeared in 34 games this season – all as a starter – with a 1.76 goals against average and a .927 save percentage in 2115:56 minutes played. She also has 793 saves on the season, including six contests with at least 30 or more stops. Among the nation's leaders, she is 12th in both GAA and save%.

A former standout with the Toronto Jr. Aeros, van der Bliek has started 21 of the team's 22 ECAC Hockey contests, posting a 10-7-4 record with a 1.76 GAA and a .929 save %. She ranked eighth among conference goalies in both goals against average and save percentage.

van der Bliek, who is the program's single season record holder in a number of categories, is also the all-time record holder for most games played (84), most games started (83), most wins (42-31-11), most minutes played (5161:36), most saves (1922) and most shutouts (16).

Harrison, a sophomore center who hails from Vienna, Va., earned her recognition after scoring two goals and an assist for the Engineers last week. She factored into three of RPI's four goals against the Bobcats, including the game-winner in Saturday's shutout.

A former standout with the Washington Pride, Harrison is third on the squad in scoring with 12 goals and 11 assists for 23 points in 36 games. Three of her goals have come on the power play, while one was a shorthanded tally and two were game-winners.

Rensselaer (16-14-6; 11-7-4 ECACH), which is the fifth-seed in this year's ECAC Hockey Playoffs, heads to Ithaca, N.Y., to face top-seeded Cornell in the conference Semifinals on Friday. The game, which will begin at 7pm, will mark the Engineers second straight appearance in the conference semis.
