TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in men's and women's outdoor track & field and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes Alec Marshall, Erik Whiting and Marie Ferro have been recognized. Marshall and Whiting were named the men's Track and Field Performers of the Week, respectively, while Ferro garnered Rookie of the Week on the women's side. This is the second straight week that all three were recognized with weekly honors.

A junior out of Wayne, N.J., Marshall placed second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.89 at the ECAC Outdoor Championships. That mark was just shy of his own school record in the event (14.88). He also finished seventh overall in the 400-m hurdles with a mark of 55.45 as the Engineers posted an eighth place finish in a field of 48 teams.

Marshall has performed consistently this season for Rensselaer, finishing first in four different meets. Among his top outings this season was at the New York State Championships, where he helped RPI to a second place finish by winning the 110-meter hurdles. A former Wayne Valley High School standout, he also won the 110-meter and the 400-meter hurdle events at the Liberty League Championships.

Whiting, a senior from Fultonville, N.Y., recorded his seventh consecutive NCAA Provisional mark at the ECAC Meet, finishing third overall in the hammer throw with a distance of 55.24 meters. Additionally, he was 11th in the discus with a throw of 43.61 meters.

A graduate of Fonda-Fultonville High School, Whiting has continued to excel in the hammer throw through seven meets, posting wins in four meets. A Liberty League champion and the 2010 Outstanding Performer of the Meet at the New York State Championships, he has also had success in the discus throw, notching four wins this season.

Ferro, a native of Endwell, N.Y., finished fifth overall, and second among all freshmen, in the 10,000-meter run at the ECAC Outdoor Championships. She posted a time of 37:08.37 in the event as the women placed 15th of 51 teams at the meet.

The Maine-Endwell High School graduate continues to be one of the Engineers top distance runners in 2010, finishing fifth or better in each of the six events she has competed through five meets. In addition to earning New York State Rookie of the Year honors after winning the 10,000m, she was second in the 5,000-run at the conference championships.

Both squads return to action on Thursday, when they compete in the Last Chance Meet at Oneonta.
