Becky Bailey Named Academic All-America

Senior shortstop and captain garners First Team recognition

TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Becky Bailey has been selected to the 2010 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America College Division Softball First Team, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). This is the second straight Academic All-America honor for Bailey, who is a three-time Academic All-District selection.

Bailey, a senior shortstop from Rome, N.Y., is a chemical engineering major with a 3.95 cumulative GPA. An Academic All-District First Team selection, she has been on the Dean's List every semester at Rensselaer and is a three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree. Bailey, who is a third-year captain, is a member of numerous societies, including the Society for Women Engineers and the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.

A representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Bailey is also a member of the Professional Leadership Program, as well as the Rensselaer & Nation Chapter of American Institute of Chemical Engineers. She has held internship positions at Indium Corporation of America, the Air Force Research Labs and ExxonMobil.

The Holland Patent High School graduate batted .348 this season with 46 hits in 132 at-bats. As a starter in all 38 games, she scored 32 runs, drove in 12 more and was 10 for 12 on stolen base attempts.

Bailey, who was an All-Liberty League Second Team selection, led both the team and the Liberty League in stolen bases. She was also third in runs scored and sixth in hits among the conference leaders.

As a junior, Bailey finished fourth nationally in sacrifice hits per game (0.45), leading both the team and the Liberty League. She was second among the conference leaders in stolen bases and fifth in runs scored. Bailey was also fourth in the nation in sacrifice hits (0.56) as a sophomore and batted .310 as a rookie in 2007, playing in all 35 games with a team-best nine stolen bases.

In her career, Bailey batted .308, starting 129 of 131 games played. She recorded 127 hits in 413 at-bats, including eight doubles, two triples and a home run. In addition to 109 runs scored, Bailey posted 42 runs batted in, stole 23 bases in 26 attempts and had 45 sacrifice hits.

The softball team, which is led by head coach Erika Lewis, finished its season with a 19-18-1 mark, including 4-4 record in Liberty League play, advancing to the Championship Round of the first ever Liberty League Tournament.
