TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete
Mike Cieszko has been selected to participate in the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL) All-Star Game. A righthanded pitcher who will be a senior at RPI this fall, Cieszko is one of only three Division III players chosen.
In six games for the Watertown Wizards – all starts – the Stevenson Ranch, Calif., native has a league-high four wins (4-2) with a 4.12 earned run average in 39.1 innings of work. He has allowed 43 hits, 19 runs (18 earned) and 13 walks with 29 strikeouts. The opposition is batting .281 against him.
The New York Collegiate Baseball League is a summer wood bat development league for professional baseball. It gives college players who have not yet signed a pro contract the opportunity to develop their skills, gain experience with wood bats, and be evaluated by scouts. There are 14 teams in the league, including the Wizards, Albany Dutchmen, Amsterdam Mohawks and Glens Falls Golden Eagles.
Tonight's All-Star Game will be held at East Field in Glens Falls. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm.
Cieszko is coming off a junior season in which he led Division III with a 1.07 earned run average. Compiling a 5-2 record in 14 appearances, he also led the team in wins and saves (2), striking out 45 batters in 42.0 innings. He held opponents to a team-best .204 batting average.
The William S. Hart High School graduate finished the season with complete games in all four of his starts, earning shutouts in three of those contests. He was named All-Liberty League and All-Region for the second time in his collegiate career.
