HAMILTON, N.Y. - Senior forward
Chase Polacek scored on a shorthanded penalty shot in overtime to lift the Rensselaer men's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Colgate in an ECAC Hockey contest at Starr Rink. The goal came at 3:25 of the extra period with the
#9/#10 Engineers killing off a five-minute major penalty.
With #C.J. Lee# having been sent to the locker room for five minutes for hitting from behind just 15 seconds into the overtime, Rensselaer was forced to the penalty kill for the duration of overtime, barring a Colgate penalty. The Engineers did just that and more as Polacek broke in alone while shorthanded. He was hauled down and a penalty shot was called, which he converted for his 11th goal of the year.
Polacek's goal was RPI's first successful penalty shot since Brad Tapper converted against Boston University on October 15, 1999.
RPI opened a 1-0 lead on a first period goal by senior
Joel Malchuk at the 9:17 mark.
Mike Bergin and
Jeff Foss earned the assists. Colgate tied the score late in the second period on a goal by Francois Brisebois.
Junior
Allen York was solid in net for RPI, stopping 29 shots and helping the Engineers be successful on each of their eight penalty kills. Eric Mihalik stopped 18 shots on the other end.
RPI improves to 13-6-3 overall and 5-5-0 in ECAC Hockey. Colgate is now 3-18-1 and 0-9-1.
