TROY, N.Y. – Junior Corey Tamblyn scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lift the Clarkson men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Rensselaer, at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Golden Knights improve to 11-8-2 overall and 5-2-1 in ECAC Hockey play. The Engineers move to 11-5-3 (3-4-0 ECAC Hockey).
Tamblyn (Bobcaygeon, ON/Markham Waxers) recorded the game-winner off of a wrap-around attempt by senior Brandon DeFazio (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) at 3:16 of the extra frame. After RPI junior goaltender
Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) made the initial save at the left pipe, the puck popped out to the low slot, where Tamblyn buried a one-timer.
Junior Mark Borowiecki (Kanata, ON/Smiths Falls Bears) gave the visitors a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal at 16:30 of the opening stanza. Picking up the rebound of a shot by sophomore Andrew Himelson (Monroe, NY/Des Moines Buccaneers), Borowiecki snapped home a shot, high stick side. Fellow sophomore Adam Pawlick (Utica, NY/Sioux City Muskateers) earned the second assist on Borowiecki's second of the season.
RPI sophomore defenseman
Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) ripped a shot from the top of the right circle, into the top right corner of the net, to pull even (1-1), midway through the second period. The goal, which was Bailen's eighth of the year, came at 10:26 of the frame and was set up by juniors
Alex Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Langley Chiefs) and
Patrick Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice).
The Engineers held a 22-16 edge in shots on goal after two periods of play, after outshooting the Golden Knights, 11-7 in the second.
Junior
Josh Rabbani (Woodland Hills, CA/St. Louis Park) deked through three Golden Knights before flipping a shot over the right pad of Clarkson junior netminder Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ON/Wellington Dukes) to give the Engineers a 2-1 lead at 9:25 of the third period. Assists on Rabbani's acrobatic finish went to sophomore Marty O'Grady (London, ON/Wellington Dukes) and Cullen.
Clarkson knotted the score at 2-2, two and half minutes later, when Tamblyn swatted in a rebound from just outside the RPI crease. Borowiecki picked up the second of his three assists on the game-tying marker, which came at 12:01 of the third.
Karpowich (11-6-2) recorded double-digit saves in each period, finishing with 32 in the game. York (10-5-3) finished with 30 stops, including 12 in the third period alone.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow night, when they host St. Lawrence (7pm). Clarkson travels to Schenectady to face Union (7pm).
