TROY, N.Y. - The 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Division III Men's Soccer teams have been announced and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes
Brad Shelofsky and
Adam Updegrove have been recognized. Shelofsky was named to the First Team, while Updegrove was named to the Third Team. It marks the first Academic All-American honor for either player.
Shelofsky, a senior out of Rochester, N.Y., is a mechanical engineering major with a minor in management & psychology. He has a 3.92 cumulative grade point average. A center back and team captain for the second straight season, he started all 17 of the squad's games, and helped anchor a defense that recorded 10 shutouts and held opponents to just 0.76 goals per contest.
A three-time Academic All-District selection, including two consecutive First Team honors, Shelofsky is a multiple Dean's List selection and Liberty League All-Academic honoree. The Greece Athena High School graduate is the recipient of the Monroe Professional Engineering Society Scholarship and is also a member of numerous honor societies within his field of study, including Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma. He has interned at Goldman Sachs, Eastman Kodak Company and Mainstream Engineering Corporation.
In his career, Shelofsky played in 75 games, starting all but one in his four years. He notched two goals with two assists for six points and helped lead the Engineers to two NCAA Tournament berths. Additionally, he was a three-time All-Liberty League honoree.
A junior midfielder who hails from Carson City, Nev., Updegrove carries a 3.98 cumulative GPA as a mechanical engineering major. He started all 14 games he played in for the Engineers in 2011, compiling a goal for two points. Updegrove, who is also a captain, earned his second straight All-League honor at year's end, being named to the Second Team.
Updegrove, who is also a diver on the men's swimming and diving team, is a two-time Academic All-District selection in his career. A volunteer for numerous organizations and a member of the Eagle Scouts of America, Updegrove has interned with Chromalloy, an engineering company that repairs, replaces and designs parts for gas turbine engines.
The Carson High School graduate is also a Rensselaer Medalist and a singer for the Festival Chorus at RPI. He also worked to build a Zenith STOL CH801 4-seat airplane kit and a Superior XP-360 aircraft engine.
Rensselaer concluded its 2011 campaign with a 7-6-4 record, going 2-3-3 in the Liberty League.
