CANTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Greg Carey assisted on both goals and the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 2-0, this evening in ECAC Hockey play from Appleton Arena. With the win the Saints improve to 1-5-0 overall (1-1-0 ECACH), while the Engineers fall to 1-8-0 (0-2-0 ECACH).
St. Lawrence got the scoring started when Carey (Hamilton, ON) sent a centering pass from the left corner that found freshman Patrick Doherty (Hanover, NH) alone in the low slot. Doherty buried a one-time just under the crossbar for the 1-0 lead. Junior Kyle Flanagan (Canton, NY) earned the second assist.
Junior defenseman George Hughes (Westwood, MA) gave the hosts a 2-0 lead a slap shot from the left point that made its way through traffic and into the top right corner of the net. The goal, which was Hughes' first of the year, was assisted by sophomore Patrick Raley (Inverness, IL) and Carey.
RPI was given a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity midway through the third period, but were unable to capitalize, finishing 0 for 6 on the man advantage. The Engineers penalty-kill was a perfect 7 for 7, allowing just eight shots on those chances.
Saints' sophomore netminder Matt Weninger (Lethbridge, AB) stopped all 18 shots he faced to earn the shutout, while RPI junior goalie
Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, PA/Topeka RoadRunners) made 18 saves at the other end of the ice.
The Engineers return to the ice next weekend, when they host ninth-ranked Yale on Black Friday (7pm), before taking on Brown on Saturday (7pm). St. Lawrence travels to Princeton and 19th-ranked Quinnipiac on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm), respectively.
