TROY, N.Y. – Powered by a four-goal effort in the final period, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team rallied from an early deficit for a 4-2 victory over Brown University in ECAC Hockey action at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers snap a four-game losing streak and are now 10-12-6, with an 8-8-1 conference mark. The Bears drop to 2-18-3 and 1-12-3 in ECAC Hockey.
Facing a 2-0 deficit after the first 40 minutes of the contest, the Engineers mounted a solid comeback with three goals within 3:19 of one another. Rookie Jordan Smelker (Anchorage, AK/Team Alaska 19U) got the flurry started at 11:29 after she skated through the near circle, collecting a pass from junior Alisa Harrison (Vienna, VA/Washington Pride) before sending a shot in from the mid-slot.
Rensselaer made it a 2-all game just 2:30 later after senior Sydney O'Keefe (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake) tipped-in a shot on the power play. Collecting a pass from junior Amanda Castignetti (Anchorage, AK/Shattuck St. Mary's) at the near point, rookie Madison Marzario (Prior Lake, MN/Shattuck St. Mary's) ripped a shot that sailed into traffic, slicing off the blade of O'Keefe's stick and past Brown goalie Katie Jamieson (Waterloo, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) at 13:59.
The Engineers wasted little time in notching the go-ahead goal as sophomore Taylor Horton (St. Thomas, ON/Bluewater Jr. Hawks) rifled a shot from the far circle that made its way past Jamieson just 39 seconds after O'Keefe's tally. Smelker and junior Sierra Vadner (Apple Valley, MN/Minn. Thoroughbreds) were credited with assists on the play.
Looking to pull things even, the Bears brought Jamieson to the bench with just 30 seconds left in the game, but the Engineers capitalized as Harrison fought through traffic at the far boards and corralled a pass from Horton, taking a shot from just inside the blue line that sailed into the open net for the 4-2 advantage.
RPI, which outshot the Bears by a 36-25 margin, including a 16-5 edge in the final period, found itself facing 1-0 disadvantage in the opening period as Brown's Alena Polenska (Caslav, Czech Republic/Princeton Tiger Lillies) notched her fifth of the season with a shot from near the top of the right circle at 2:54 on the power play.
The Bears once again capitalized on the power play in the second stanza as Erica Kromm (Naramata, BC/BC Outback) found the puck off a pass from Polenska and took an off-balance shot that went into the left corner of the net past senior netminder Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros), who finished with 23 shots in the game. Jamieson made 32 saves for the Bears.
The Engineers are back on the ice on Saturday, hosting Yale at the Houston Field House (4pm). Saturday's contest also marks the Annual Alumnae Game, which will be played at 1pm. The Bears travel to Schenectady to face Union (4pm).
