TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in men's and women's lacrosse and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes Devin Arnold and Stephanie Caouette have been recognized. Arnold was selected as the men's Offensive Performer of the Week, while Caouette garnered the same honor on the women's side.
A senior attack from Buffalo, N.Y., Arnold scored a game-best and team-high four goals last week to lift RPI to a 16-10 win over Oneonta State. He also added an assist with all five of his shots going on goal. Three of his tallies, including the eventual game-winner, came during a critical fourth quarter run to help the Engineers pull away from the Red Dragons.
This is the first weekly honor of the season for Arnold, who is currently second on the team in scoring with seven goals and an assist for eight points. In addition to a man-up tally and a game-winning goal, he has scooped up two ground balls and has a caused turnover to his credit.
A former standout at Canisius High School, Arnold is coming off a 2010 season in which he recorded 33 points on 22 goals and 11 assists. Appearing in all 17 games, he helped the Engineers win the Liberty League Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament. Arnold led the team in scoring as a sophomore in 2008 with 33 points (24 goals, 9 assists) and had six points (5g, 1a) during his rookie campaign.
Caouette, a senior attack out of Wynantskill, N.Y., garnered her honor after leading RPI to a 1-1 week with a team-high six goals on 10 shots (9 on goal). She also had two ground balls and a caused turnover. In a 10-5 win over Western New England, she posted a game-best five goals. She then added a tally in a 9-4 loss at Nazareth.
The Columbia High School graduate leads the Engineers in scoring this season with her six goals. Last year, Caouette finished third on the squad in scoring with 16 goals and 14 assists for 30 points. A starter in all 14 games in 2010, she added 37 ground balls, 26 draw controls and five caused turnovers.
In her career, Caouette has posted 90 goals and 42 assists for 132 points in 45 games. She is currently the program's all-time leader in assists and is just one point shy of tying the all-time mark for points in her career.
The men's lacrosse team (2-1), ranked 12th-nationally, is back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Georgetown, Texas for a tilt against Southwestern University (4pm ET/3pm CT). The women's lacrosse (1-1) team faces Connecticut College on Monday (4pm) in West Palm Beach, Fla.
