Kevin Prosicki delivered the game-winning RBI-single and Junior
Dan Duval threw an 11-inning complete game to lead the Rensselaer baseball team to a 5-4, 11-inning, victory over Vassar College in game one of a doubleheader. Sophomore
Chuck Erickson then won game two with a double to centerfield as the Engineers (13-8; 6-2 Liberty League) won, 5-4, in the bottom of the seventh. The Brewers drop to 10-10 overall (5-7 Liberty League).
After coming back from a 4-0 deficit to the tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Engineers had a number of opportunities to plate the winning run, before finally doing so in the bottom of the 11th.
With two outs in the RPI half of the 11th, sophomore
Jonny Rio (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) drew a walk. Classmate
Tanner Boucher (Keene, NH/Keene) then pulled a single to right, before Prosicki (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) came through with game-winning RBI-base hit to second base, scoring Rio all the way from second.
Duval (Middleton, MA/Masconomet) earned his fourth win of the season (4-1) by allowing four runs (3 earned) on seven hits in game one. He struck out five, while walking five. The righthander did not allow a run after the fifth inning.
Vassar junior Zachary Prudoff (St. Croix, Virgin Islands/St. Croix) was tagged with the loss, allowing just one run on seven hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out two and walked five. Brewers' starter John MacGregor (Montclair, NJ/Montclair Kimberley) went 5.0 innings, surrendering four runs (1 earned) on nine hits. He recorded four strikeouts with a walk.
Erickson went 3 for 6 in the day's first contest, while Boucher finished 2 for 4 with a run scored an RBI. Brewers senior catcher David Ringold (Seattle, WA/Ballard) picked up his first two hits of the season, including his first home run.
In game two, the Engineers once again won in come-back fashion, plating three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead. Sophomore
Keith Malin (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Gables) delivered a two-run single in the frame, before Erickson drove Malin home with an opposite-field base-hit to left.
After the Brewers tied the game in the top of the seventh, Erickson ripped a double to the wall in center, scoring Boucher from second for the, 5-4, walk-off win.
Engineers' starter
Levi Washburn (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) picked up the win (1-0) in his first start of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits in 7.0 inning. Pitching a complete game, he struck out eight, while walking four.
RPI returns to the diamond next weekend, when it visits Rochester for a four-game series, beginning on Saturday (1pm).
