Men & Women Boast 34 Selections on ECAC Hockey All-Academic Teams

TROY, N.Y. – ECAC Hockey has announced its members of the 2010-11 Men's and Women's All-Academic Team and 34 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been recognized, including 12 who are making their third straight appearances on the list and six who have been recognized all four years of their careers.

Honorees from the men's team, which produced 23 selections, include Alex Angers-Goulet, Nick Bailen, Kevin Beauregard, Mike Bergin, Bryan Brutlag, Greg Burgdoerfer, Jeremy Coupal, Bo Dolan, Jeff Foss, Scott Halpern, Tyler Helfrich, Brock Higgs, John Kennedy, Guy Leboeuf, #C.J. Lee#, Joel Malchuk, Bryce Merriam, Marty O'Grady, Chase Polacek, Johnny Rogic, Justin Smith and Matt Tinordi.

Foss, Halpern, Helfrich, Malchuk and Polacek are making their fourth straight appearance on the league's All-Academic Team, while Angers-Goulet and Smith are three-time honorees. Merriam and O'Grady have both been named twice. 

As a team, the Engineers men produced the second most selections of any ECAC Hockey school. Brown and Quinnipiac University, which both had 23 selections, led the league followed by Rensselaer. Dartmouth College, Union College and Yale University each had 16 selections. Colgate University, Harvard University and Princeton University had 15 each, followed by Cornell University (12), St. Lawrence University (10) and Clarkson University (6).

The RPI women saw 12 players selected to this year's team. Those recognized were Amanda Castignetti, Katie Daniels, Kendra Dunlop, Ashley Gaylord, Laura Guillemette, Alisa Harrison, Kristen Jakubowski, Madison Marzario, Sydney O'Keefe, Jordan Smelker and Jill Vandegrift.

O'Keefe is the squad's lone honoree to have been selected all four years, while Daniels, Gaylord, Guillemette and Jakubowski are three-time selections. Castignetti, Dunlop and Harrison have all been named to the league's All-Academic Team twice. 

The Engineers women had the sixth-most selections among the league's institutions. Yale led the way for the second straight season with 19 honorees. Dartmouth and Quinnipiac were second with 14, while Cornell, Harvard and Union each had 13 selections. Princeton and Rensselaer posted 12 honorees, while Clarkson (9), St. Lawrence (8), Colgate (6) and Brown (5) rounded out this year's honors.

Student-athletes are eligible for the All-Academic Team if they have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale or have an average GPA of 3.00 over the past three semesters.

The RPI men posted a 20-13-5 record (11-9-2 ECACH), a national ranking for most of the season and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The team recorded back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in nearly 10 years and ranked in the top-15 in the country in a number of categories.

The Engineers' women concluded their season with a 10-18-7 overall record (8-12-2 ECACH), advancing to the conference playoffs for the third straight season.
