Jordan Smelker scored twice and
Taylor Horton had a goal and an assist to lead the Rensselaer women's hockey team to a 4-3 win over Princeton in an ECAC Hockey contest at Hobey Baker Rink. RPI improves to 3-11-2 overall and 1-5-0 in the league, while the Tigers fall to 5-7-2 and 2-6-2.
Horton, a senior, started the scoring with only nine seconds left in the first period when she scored an unassisted shorthanded goal. Sophomore
Eleeza Cox followed 44 seconds into the second period, also scoring unassisted, to give RPI a 2-0 lead. Smelker's first of the game came less than five minutes later with Horton and
Taylor Mahoney earning the assists and the score remained 3-0 going into the third period.
Princeton pulled to within a goal thanks to a pair of shorthanded goals within a 55-second span early in the final stanza. Kelly Cooke and Corey Stearns set each other up for goals. Smelker, a junior, provided a two-goal cushion with her second of the game and sixth of the season at 8:16. Cooke struck again for the home team with 2:15 remaining and the Tigers' goalie on the bench. RPI held off the Tigers from that point to snap a three-game losing streak.
Sophomore
Kelly O'Brien made 13 saves, including seven in the first period, for the win in goal, while Kimberly Newell had 23 saves for Princeton.
RPI is home next weekend when it plays Brown and Yale for ECAC Hockey contests.
