TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team held Brown University to just 10 shots and the Engineers blanked the Bears, 3-0, in an ECAC Hockey game at the Houston Field House. Sophomore
Kelly O'Brien earned the win by making two saves in the first period, two in the second and six in the third period.
RPI has now won two straight games and improves to 4-11-2 overall and 2-5-0 in the league. Brown is 1-8-1 and 1-6-0.
The Engineers took the lead at 8:23 of the first period when freshman
Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ / New Jersey Rockets) intercepted a Brown clearing attempt, skated from the left faceoff circle to the middle of the ice and wristed a shot under the crossbar for her fourth goal of the season.
Rensselaer made it 2-0 when junior
Toni Sanders (York, PA / Susquehanna Rapids U-19) found a loose puck at the side of the net and stuffed it in at 3:50 of the third period. Senior
Katie Daniels (Rockton, IL / Chicago Mission) started the play from the defensive zone when she passed the puck out of the defensive zone to
Mariana Walsh (Walpole, MA / Phillips Andover), who sent the puck deep. Brown netminder Aubree Moore (Bowie, MD) was unable to control it and Sanders finished the play.
The Bears nearly cut the deficit in half with 4:40 left the third period when Victoria Smith (Montreal, PQ) hit the post and the rebound stayed in the crease but O'Brien (Sussex, WI / Madison Capitals) covered the puck. Brown then had a two-minute, 5-on-3 advantage - during which it actually got the goalie on the bench for a 6-on-3 edge - but could not find the back of the net. The majority of O'Brien's saves came during that sequence.
Junior
Jordan Smelker (Anchorage, AK / Team Alaska 19U) scored into an empty net with 35 seconds left for the final margin.
Moore finished with 18 saves for the Bears, who had five power play opportunities.
RPI hosts Yale University on Saturday at 4pm, while the Bears travel to Union for a 4pm faceoff.
