TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Taylor Mahoney scored a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner with 1:07 remaining in the third period, to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a, 4-3, victory over Yale University, this afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-11-2 overall and 3-5-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Bulldogs drop to 2-11-1 (1-6-1 ECAC Hockey).
With the game tied, 3-3, late in the third, the Engineers rushed up ice before freshman
Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburgh, PA/Washington Pride) took a shot from the left side of the net. The rebound popped to Mahoney (Cary, IL/Chicago Mission) who buried her second of the game and third of the season. Freshman
Mari Mankey (Coon Rapids, MN/Hopkins) earned the second assist.
The Bulldogs pulled sophomore netminder Jaimie Leonoff (Montreal, PQ) with just under a minute to play, but could not muster a shot on goal.
Yale senior Jen Matichuk (St. Albert, AB) tapped in her first goal of the season from close range to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at 4:08 of the opening period.
Engineers' senior captain
Taylor Horton (St. Thomas, ON) answered at 8:44 of the first, netting the first of RPI's three power-play goals on the afternoon. Assists on Horton's sixth of the year went to junior
Andie Le Donne (Toronton, ON/Durham West Lightning) and senior captain
Katie Daniels (Rockton, IL/Chicago Mission).
Gruschow gave the hosts a lead (2-1), 4:23 in the second stanza, sticking home the rebound off point shot by sophomore
Kathryn Schilter ( Aurora, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros). A second helper was credited to
Eleeza Cox (St. Catherines, ON/Ridley School).
Yale then struck in quick succession to retake the lead (3-2), as freshman Jamie Haddad (Wilbraham, MA) and senior captain Alyssa Zupon (Basking Ridge, NJ) scored their fourth and third goals of the season, respectively.
A late second period (18:14) goal from Mahoney evened the game at 3-3.
RPI sophomore goaltender
Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI/Madison Capitals) made 18 saves to improve to 4-10-1 on the season. Leonoff (2-11-1) stopped 34 shots at the other end of the ice.
