Three Earn Academic All-District Honors

Boucher and Erickson recognized in baseball & McCarthy in softball

TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes Tanner Boucher, Chuck Erickson and Gillian McCarthy have been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District First Teams in baseball and softball, respectively. All three are now eligible for National Academic All-America consideration.

Boucher is a business and management and economics dual major with a 3.42 cumulative grade point average. Erickson holds a 3.37 GPA as a business and management major with a minor in communications. McCarthy is a business and management and communications dual major with a 3.92 cumulative grade point average. All three are juniors.

A leftfielder, Boucher (Keene, NH/Keene) is third on the Engineers in batting with a .331 average in 40 games, all starts. He has 49 hits, including nine doubles, a triple and four home runs, with 31 runs scored and 32 knocked in. He also has 10 stolen bases. As a sophomore, Boucher played 38 games, hitting .311 with 43 hits, including a Liberty League-best four home runs. He was second in the league in runs batted in with 34 en route to earning All-Liberty League Honorable Mention and the team's Falkerstein Award for qualities of dedication and high academic and athletic achievement.

A captain, Boucher is a multiple Liberty League All-Academic honoree who has been on the Dean's List every semester. He served as a finance intern with C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. and Unified Logistics, LLC, and he participated in the 2012 RPI Business Plan Competition as well as the 2011 TradeKing Campus Challenge.

Erickson (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield) is a first baseman who is batting .290 in 39 games. He is first in the league in home runs with eight and second on the team in runs batted in (36) and slugging percentage (.527). He has seven doubles with 21 runs. In the field he boasts a .985 fielding percentage with just four errors in 265 chances. Last season Erickson started 35 games, hitting .371 with 10 doubles, three home runs and 24 RBI. He was an All-Liberty League First Team selection and named All-ECAC.

He is a multiple Liberty League All-Academic and Dean's List honoree. He participates in community service efforts at Clothes2Go at a United Methodist Church.

McCarthy (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington), who also plays first base, hit .357 while starting all 41 games this season. She had 10 doubles, a triple and eight home runs with 23 runs and 50 RBI. The captain is first in the Liberty League in homers and runs batted in, second in total bases (82), fourth in slugging percentage (.636) and fifth in hits (46). She was an All-League First Team selection for the third consecutive season.

In her career, McCarthy has a .384 batting average in 116 games, all starts. She has 149 hits, including 34 doubles, six triples and 14 home runs, with 81 runs and 119 runs batted in. Her slugging percentage is .611 and her fielding percentage is .979.

Off the field, McCarthy is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is involved in the Professional Leadership Program. She is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, a management honor society, as well as the Epsilon Delta Sigma Honor Society. She has interned with Target, Inc., the last two summers.

McCarthy helped the softball team to a 27-14 overall record and a 9-1 league mark. The Engineers were the top seed in the Liberty League Tournament and advanced to the championship game for the second consecutive year.

Rensselaer's baseball team is 22-18 overall and 19-9 in the league. The Engineers are the second seed in this weekend's Liberty League Tournament, which takes place at top-seeded St. Lawrence beginning Thursday. RPI plays third-seeded Skidmore at noon in Canton. The game will be broadcast live on WRPI, 91.5 FM, and www.wrpi.org.
