TROY, N.Y. – The 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 3 Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), have been announced and three Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been selected.
Morgan Danner,
Christine Koch and
Ariel Mingrone have all been named to the First Team. As such, the trio is now eligible for National Academic All-America consideration.
A senior who hails from McLean, Va., Danner is an architecture major with a 3.64 cumulative grade point average. A Dean's List and Liberty League All-Academic selection throughout her career, she helped pace the Engineers to second at the 2012 Liberty League outdoor championships, winning her third pole vault title in four years. She also placed seventh in the event at the New York State Meet, while helping the 4x100 relay team to fifth.
Danner, who is a two-time Liberty League Field Performer of the Meet and a three-time All-League honoree, has been the recipient of multiple awards, including the International Bentley Architecture Scholarship, the RPI Merit Award and the Ed Graphic Presentation Award. In addition to finishing her bachelor's degree in architecture, Danner is also working toward her masters in management when she returns next year to complete her eligibility in track & field.
Koch, a senior from Seaford, N.Y., graduated Magna Cum Laude in May with a degree in architecture. She boasted a cumulative GPA of 3.76 and was a multiple Dean's List and conference All-Academic during her career. A captain on the cross country team in the fall of 2011, Koch had a standout season for RPI, finishing eighth at the league meet to garner All-League honors for the fourth straight season. She also placed ninth at the State Championships to earn All-State recognition. Additionally, Koch placed 34th at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals to earn her second All-Region honor.
A former standout at Sacred Heart Academy, Koch helped the Engineers women's cross country team to their first-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships in 2009, finishing 28th individually at the Regional Meet. The recipient of the RPI Emily Roebling Scholarship, Koch was a three-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic and also completed RPI's Architecture Study Abroad Program in Rome. She was also inducted in RPI's Olympia Honor Society.
A senior from Shelton, Conn., Mingrone also graduted in May with a degree in biomedical engineering and a 3.74 cumulative grade point average. A three-time captain in both cross country and track & field, she finished third overall in the 3,000-m steeplechase at the 2012 Liberty League outdoor meet, while also placing ninth in the event at States. Additionally, she finished sixth overall in the 4x800m relay at the ECAC outdoor championships.
Mingrone, who is a graduate of Shelton High School, was also a key contributor in the women's cross country team's first-ever appearance at the NCAA meet. A member of RPI's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, the Alpha Epsilon Lambda Graduate Honor Society and RPI's Olympia Honor Society, she served as an undergraduate research assistant at Rensselaer and also interned at Covidien.
