Hudson Falls, N.Y. — The Rensselaer men's golf team shot a first round 290 to take a commanding five stroke lead in the first round of the Liberty League Qualifier being played on the par-71 Kingswood Golf Course.
The top four finishers in the seven-team event will playoff in the spring for the Liberty League's automatic NCAA Division III tournament bid.
The Engineers are five strokes ahead of defending champion Skidmore (295) and 11 in front of Rochester (301). St. Lawrence (304) is fourth, two strokes ahead of New York University. Clarkson (312) and Hobart (328) round out the field.
RPI's James Jackson fired a one-under 70 to take the early lead. He's two strokes in front of a pack of four players, including Skidmore freshman Makenzie Denver and senior Anthony DiLisio. G.W. VanderZwaag of Rochester and
Brandon Mader of RPI are also in the group at 72.
