TROY, N.Y. - Junior Nina Riley stopped 22 of 23 shots, including 11 in the third period, and Providence College defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 2-1 in a non-league women's ice hockey game at Houston Field House. The Friars improve to 10-9-4, while the Engineers are now 6-13-2.
After making 11 saves in the first two periods combined, Riley (Lexington, MA) doubled her total in the third period to improve to 3-3-1 on the season. RPI's
Brianna Piper (Oakville, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros), a sophomore, stopped 18 shots in the loss. She is now 1-2-1.
Providence broke out on top with a goal at 14:19 of the first period when Haley Frade (Marion, MA) scored on a rebound of a Courtney Kukowski (Apple Valley, MN) shot. Piper made the initial save but Frade stuffed the rebound off Piper's pads, between her legs and over the goal line. Molly Illikainen (Grand Rapids, MN) was also credited with an assist on the goal, which was Frade's eighth of the season.
The Friars went ahead by two goals at 9:08 of the third period when junior Corinne Buie (Edina, MN) scored on a slap shot from the left faceoff circle. Sophomore Brooke Simpson (Boxboro, MA) won a faceoff in the right circle, drawing the puck back to classmate Victoria Virtue (Walpole, MA). Virtue sent a pass diagonally across the ice to Buie, who scored for the eighth time this season.
Rensselaer pulled to within a goal five minutes later when senior captain
Katie Daniels (Rockton, IL / Chicago Mission) crept in from the left point and stuffed in her own rebound. The goal was the first of the season for Daniels, and the first of the year for an RPI defenseman. Classmate
Taylor Horton (St. Thomas, ON / Bluewater Hawks), who is also a captain, had the assist on the goal.
The Engineers drew a power play with just over two minutes remaining in the third period and they managed to pull Piper for an extra skater but they could not beat Riley. RPI finished 1 for 4 on the power play, while the Friars were 0 for 5.
These same two teams meet on Saturday afternoon at 4pm at Houston Field House.
