Men's Cross Country Takes Fifth at Regionals

MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y. - SUNY Cortland junior Nick Marcantonio won the individual title to lead the Red Dragons to their third team title in six years at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Men's Cross Country Championships, Saturday afternoon, at the Highbanks Recreation Area of Letchworth State Park, hosted by SUNY Geneseo.

Rensselaer finished fifth in the 39-team field of 272 runners by placing three runners in the top 25. Junior Jacob Andrews was 22nd overall, following directly by sophomore Bobby Parker and senior Sean Quinn.

Cortland placed three runners in the top five on its way to a winning score of 37 points, to out-distance runner-up NYU (62), the host Knights (103), St. Lawrence (118) and RPI (148). 

Cortland seniors Pat Fannon (25:14.4) and Cody Amengual (25:16.1) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, while junior Jarred Iacovelli (25:27.8) and senior Casey Austin (25:28.2) placed 13th and 14th as the Red Dragons claimed five of the first 15 spots.

NYU senior Dylan Karten logged his second-straight runner-up individual performance (25:04.4) to lead the Violets.

With their top-two finishes, Cortland and NYU earned automatic berths to next week's NCAA Division III Championships in Hanover, Ind. Sixteen other team at-large bids will be awared across the nation's eight total regions, while the top-seven individual finishers from today's race non on one of the team qualifiers will also qualify for the national championship.
