Jason Kasdorf

TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Department of Athletics year-end award winners for the 2012-13 season have been announced and five student-athletes have been recognized with prestigious honors. Mike Hermann of the football team was chosen in two categories, collecting both the Male Athlete of the Year and the Male Career Athlete. Gillian McCarthy of softball is the Female Career Athlete, while Allie Arnal of lacrosse garnered Female Athlete of the Year. The Female Freshman of the Year is Taylor Ten Eyck of softball and Jason Kasdorf of the hockey team earned Male Freshman of the Year.

A four-year starter and three-time All-Liberty League quarterback, including two-time Offensive Player of the Year, and two-time All-Region choice, Hermann (Hardeeville, SC / Avon Old Farms) completed 178 of 296 passes (60.1%) for 2,366 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2012. He was intercepted eight times and had an efficiency rating of 147.51. In his career, he accumulated 7,177 yards passing (619 for 1078) with 57 touchdowns and only 31 interceptions in 36 games. He also rushed 435 times for 1935 yards and 29 touchdowns. Hermann is among the top three in nearly every category for quarterbacks in Rensselaer history.

McCarthy (Worthington, OH / Thomas Worthington) was the Co-Player of the Year in the Liberty League as a senior and was a unanimous All-League First Team first baseman in each year of her career. A two-time captain she played 153 games (all starts), hitting .391 (196 for 501), with 42 doubles, seven triples, 21 home runs, 101 runs scored and 154 runs batted in. She compiled a .629 slugging percentage and a .438 on-base percentage, while playing .980 defense. McCarthy was also a two-time Capital One National Academic All-America, earning First Team in 2013.

A goalie in lacrosse, Arnal (Lakewood, NY / Phillips Exeter Academy) garnered National All-America Third Team honors, the Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year award and the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year award after posting a 16-4 record with a 7.46 goals against average and a .537 save percentage. She equaled her own school record for wins in a season, while setting the mark for games played by a goaltender, starting in all 20 contests this year. Her 158 saves ranks third in school history. She backstopped the team to the league's regular season and tournament titles for the second straight year. RPI advanced all the way to the National Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament – the deepest in school history.

Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY / Guilderland), a freshman catcher, was second on the team with a .357 (41 for 115) batting average, while starting all 41 games. She had a home run, five doubles, 27 runs scored and 24 runs batted in, while amassing a .426 slugging percentage and a .387 on-base percentage. She was also a perfect 3 for 3 on stolen base attempts. She was the Liberty League Rookie of the Year and named All-ECAC after helping the Engineers to the Liberty League Tournament title.

A National Hockey League draft choice of the Winnipeg Jets, Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB / Des Moines Buccaneers) was the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year as well as an All-ECAC Hockey Second Team and All-Rookie Team selection. He had a 14-5-2 overall record, a 1.62 goals against average and a .935 save percentage. His goals against average set the school's single season record and he had the second highest save percentage in school history. In 17 league contests, Kasdorf was 12-2-2 with a 1.39 average, a .945 percentage and three shutouts.
