TROY, N.Y. – Senior captain Jordan Smelker recorded three goals and an assist to the lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 9-0 victory over Brock University, in exhibition action from the Houston Field House.

Smelker (Anchorage, AK/Team Alaska 19U) opened the scoring at 17:58 of the first period, when junior Ali Svoboda (Arlington Heights, IL/Chicago Mission) found her streaking to the net for the one-time finish. Fellow junior Taylor Mahoney (Cary, IL/Chicago Mission) earned the second helper.

Rensselaer made it 2-0, 24 seconds later, converting after a scrum in front of the Brock goal. Senior Toni Sanders (York, PA/Susquehanna Rapids U-19) came up with the decisive crack at the puck, pushing it past Badgers sophomore netminder Julia Ouroumis (Pickering, ON). Sophomore Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburgh, PA/Washington Pride) and Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ/new Jersey Rockets) had the assists.

The Engineers then scored four times in the opening 9:55 of the second period to break the game open. Gruschow netted a shorthanded goal at 1:27 of the frame, before senior Nona Letuligasenoa (Fairbanks, AK/North American Hockey Academy) snuck in from behind the net and scored at 2:49, after taking a feed from Wash.

Mahoney scored immediately off a face-off at 3:02 of the second, before Smelker netted her second of the game at 9:55.

Smelker then completed the hat-trick at 9:25 of the third off Svoboda's third assist of the contest. Wash tallied 24 seconds later, before Svoboda capped the scoring at 15:46 of the third.

Junior netminder Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI/Madison Capitals) made six saves, before giving way to classmate Brianna Piper (Oakville, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros), who stopped all seven shots she faced. Sophomore Sara Till (Jericho, VT/Rice Academy) played the final 4:14 and did not see  a shot on goal.

The Engineers open their regular season schedule next weekend, when they travel to Robert Morris for a two-game series.
