ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Cristoval Nieves recorded two goals and an assist to lead the University of Michigan men's hockey team to a 6-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this evening in the finale of a two-game non-league series. With the win, the Wolverines improve to 7-6-0 overall, while the Engineers drop to 6-9-1.
Michigan scored three first period goals, starting with Kevin Lohan at the 7:53 mark. Alex Kile netted his seventh of the year at 14:50, with assists to Nieves and Zach Hyman. Nieves then made it 3-0 three minutes later. Tyler Motte earned, who picked up an assist on the game's opening tally, nabbed the primary assist on Nieves' first of two on the night.
Nieves scored the only goal of the second period. Andrew Copp and goaltender Zach Nagelvoort assisted on Michigan's second man-advantage goal of the night.
The Wolverines tacked on two more goals in the third period, including Tony Calderone's first of the season.Â
RPI senior netminder
Scott Diebold (0-3-1) finished with 27 saves, including 11 in the first period. Nagelvoort (5-5-0) had 24 stops in the opening 55:19, before Luke Dwyer made two saves in the final 4:24.
The Engineers are back on the ice next weekend, when they travel to Yale and Brown on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm), respectively.Â
