TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Shannon MacAulay scored twice to lead a 47-shot attack as the Clarkson University women's ice hockey team defeated Rensselear Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 5-1, in an ECAC Hockey game at Houston Field House. The No. 4 Golden Knights improve to 21-4-3 overall and 12-2-2 in the league. Clarkson has now won five straight games and has an unbeaten streak of 11 games (10-0-1). The Engineers fall to 10-15-2 and 6-9-1.
MacAulay (Mt. Herbert, PEI / Warner Warriors) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal early in the second period and tallied again midway through the third period. She now has seven goals and 12 points in 26 games. She was one of three Golden Knights to register multiple points in the game.
RPI broke on top at 8:24 when freshman defenseman
Heidi Huhtamaki's (Espoo, Finland / Espoo Blues) slapshot deflected off a Clarkson defender's skate and under goaltender Erica Howe (Ottawa, ON / Ottawa Senators). Huhtamaki stepped into a rebound of an
Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburgh, PA / Washington Pride) shot to notch her third goal of the season.
Clarkson tied the game on a power play goal from sophomore Ranata Fast (Burlington, ON / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) scored from the top of the right faceoff circle at the 11:20 mark. Genevieve Bannon (Candiac, PQ / Ontario Hockey Academy) had the primary assist, while Vanessa Plante (Riviere-du-Loup, PQ / Limoilou Titans) had the secondary helper. The goal was the first of the season for Fast, a defenseman.
The first period ended tied at 1-1 with the Golden Knights holding a 21-7 edge in shots, thanks in part to four power play opportunities. RPI junior
Brianna Piper (Oakville, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros) had 20 saves.
Clarkson pulled away with three goals in the second period, two of which came on the power play. MacAulay scored from just inside the top of the right faceoff circle just 1:27 into the frame, senior Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ON / Ottawa Senators) scored under the crossbar from just outside the crease at 15:49 and Plante tallied from the top of the left faceoff circle on a shot that hit a Rensselaer defender with just 12 seconds left in the frame. Erin Ambrose (Keswick, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros) had assists on the first two goals of the period, while Brittany Styner (Calgary, AB / Edge School Mountaineers) set up the last two. Plante's goal, her second of the season, came at even-strength.
The Golden Knights outshot the Engineers, 15-3, in the period, with Piper stopping 12 shots and Howe making nine on the other end.
MacAulay then scored on her own rebound from just outside the crease at 9:48 of the third period for the final margin. Clarkson, which was 3 for 7 on the power play, held a 47-12 advantage in shots. Howe finished with 11 saves to improve to 21-4-3.
Piper had 42 saves for RPI, which was 0 for 2 on the power play.
Rensselaer is on the road next weekend, beginning on Friday night at Brown University (7pm), while Clarkson hosts nationally-ranked Quinnipiac University on Friday in Potsdam, N.Y. (7pm). Both games are ECAC Hockey contests.
