Heidi Huhtamaki of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's ice hockey team has been chosen to participate in the Team Finland Camp, which will help determine who represents the country in the World Championships in March. A sophomore at RPI, Huhtamaki is a native of Espoo, Finland.
The camp begins today (Aug. 24) and runs until Friday in Åland. The team plays its first three international games - all against rival Sweden - in a mini-tournament known as Finncampen.
Team Finland is scheduled to meet up in Turku on Sunday and travel by ferry to Åland on Monday. On Tuesday, it has a full day of practice and meetings and then games against Sweden on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The team travels home on Friday.
Finland's national team will have six camps before the World Championships take place in Sweden in March. There are approximately 30 players from which to choose before the final cut. This week's camp features 23 players, including two goalies, eight defensemen - including Huhtamaki - and 13 forwards.
As a freshman for the Engineers, Huhtamaki played 29 games, tallying three goals with 12 assists. Her 15 points led the team's first year players. She had one power play goal, a game-tying tally and three penalties for six minutes. She was an ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team selection and the team's Rookie of the Year.
RPI, which is coached by
John Burke, begins the 2014-15 campaign with an exhibition game against the Ottawa Jr. Senators on September 26 at the Houston Field House (7pm). The team's regular season opener is October 3 at the University of North Dakota (8pm).
