TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Director of Athletics Dr. Lee McElroy has announced the hiring of Sarah Lombard as assistant women's basketball coach. She returns to Rensselaer to aide 15th-year head coach John Greene.

A native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Lombard has been in college coaching since 2008. She was most recently an assistant coach at Hamilton College, where she was responsible for post-player development, scouting opponents, and local and national recruitment.

Lombard also has experience as a head coach, having served in that capacity, as well as assistant athletic director, at Bard College. From 2010 to 2014, she led Raptors women's basketball in all aspects, including recruitment, player development, practice planning and scheduling, strength & conditioning, academic monitoring, budgeting and fundraising.

Among the accomplishments with Lombard at the helm were the school's first 1,000-point scorer and the program's all-time leading rebounder, a Liberty League Rookie of the Year, an All-League First Team honoree and nine All-Academic selections.

Lombard went to Bard from RPI after two years as an assistant coach under Greene. In her first stint, Rensselaer won the league championship and played in the NCAA Tournament with the Liberty League Player of the Year, who was also the school's all-time leading scorer (Whitney Coleman).

She was critical in implementing the offensive and defensive sets, while also handling film study and breakdown while recruiting nationally. Rensselaer's student-athletes earned numerous league awards including Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, All-Liberty League, Liberty League All-Tournament Team and 10 All-Academic honorees. RPI posted a cumulative 35-18 overall record and a 20-8 league mark.

A former standout at SUNY Oswego, Lombard has worked numerous camps and clinics as an instructor, lecturer, clinician and presenter. Outside of basketball, she participated in a variety of events as an administrator while at Bard, including a trip to Haiti to assist in rebuilding the country following an earthquake there.

Lombard's playing career saw her score 1,098 points as a forward for Oswego, where she holds the record for career field goal percentage. In 105 games, she also had 726 rebounds with 123 assists, 114 blocks and 154 steals.

She led the team in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots during her freshman and sophomore seasons. She was All-Conference three times, SUNYAC All-Tournament twice and All-Region once. The Lakers won 20 games twice and played in two NCAA Tournaments, advancing to the Second Round once.

Lombard graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Health & Promotional Wellness Management.
