Men's Hockey Falls to Brown

TROY, N.Y. – Mark Naclerio scored a goal and recorded an assist to lead Brown University to a 6-3 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in ECAC Hockey action on Friday night at Houston Field House on Military Appreciation Night. With the loss, the Engineers drop to 9-21-1 overall, with a 7-11-0 mark in ECAC Hockey play, while Brown moves to 6-17-1 with a 3-13-1 league slate.
 
Jacob Laliberte got the Engineers on the board just 1:19 into the game. Mark McGowan took as shot that was saved by Brown goaltender Tim Ernst, but Laliberte got the rebound  put it into the back of the net. Jared Wilson picked up the secondary assist.
 
Brown tied the game at 9:08 when Joe Prescott carried the puck down the ice on a breakaway and flipped it glove side past RPI goaltender Jason Kasdorf. Ben Tegtmeyer was credited with the assist. The Bears took a 2-1 lead at 11:59 when Naclerio scored on another breakaway. Dane Cooper passed the puck ahead, Naclerio brought it down the far side of the ice and took a shot from just inside the circle that zipped between Kasdorf's pads.
 
The Bears increased their advantage to 3-1 at 4:33 of the second period on a goal by Matt Harlow, with assists going to Ryan Jacobson and Massimo LaMacchia. RPI cut the lead to one goal at 14:18 when Milos Bubela scored on a hard shot from above the near circle. Zach Schroeder passed the puck to Bubela to get the assist, while Curtis Leonard also picked up a helper.
 
Less than a minute into the third period, Brown struck again to push the advantage back to two goals. Sam Lafferty wrapped the puck around RPI goaltender Scott Diebold, who replaced Kasdorf after the Harlow goal, following a scramble in front of the net. Assists went to Josh McArdle and Tyler Wood.
 
Bubela assisted Mark Miller at 9:52 to pull Rensselaer back to within 4-3. Bubela carried the puck around the back of the net before passing to a waiting Miller in front of the goal. Miller one-timed a shot past Tim Ernst for the score. However, Naclerio assisted Nick Lappin at 15:49 on the power play for a 5-3 Bears lead. Lappin shot from the near faceoff circle, sending the puck glove side on Diebold. The Bears wrapped up the scoring with a last-second empty-net goal by Matt Lorito.
 
Both teams took 26 shots on goal in the game, while Rensselaer held a 34-27 advantage in faceoff wins. Kasdorf played 23:33 as the starter, making 10 saves, while Diebold also stopped 10 opposing shots in 33:17. He took the loss. Ernst recorded 23 saves for Brown.
 
RPI returns to action on Saturday, hosting #15 Yale University in the 38th Annual Big Red Freakout! at 7pm. Prior to the start of the game, Rensselaer will induct John Carter '86 into the Ring of Honor. Brown continues ECAC Hockey play at Union College on Saturday, also starting at 7pm.
