TROY, N.Y. – Three players recorded multiple points to lead the 10th-ranked Colgate University women's hockey team to a 5-3 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win the Raiders improve 15-5-7 overall (7-3-5 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 8-13-4 (6-7-2 ECAC Hockey).
Colgate broke a 3-3 tie, just 1:18 into the third period, on a power play goal by sophomore Annika Zalewski (New Hartford, NY/Buffalo Bison). A shot from the blue line by freshman Olivia Zafuto (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls Jr. Purple Eagles) was tipped in by Zalewski, who was standing at the top of the crease. Sophomore Shelby Perry (Elginburg, ON/Kingston Ice Wolves) picked up the secondary assist.
Sophomore Breanne Wilson-Bennett (Markham, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) gave the Raiders a two goal cushion (5-3) at 9:28 of the third, scoring a wrist shot from the slot, after intercepting a pass in the offensive zone. The unassisted tally was her 11th of the year.
RPI opened the scoring at 4:01 of the first period. Senior
Mari Mankey (Hopkins, MN/Hopkins) buried a feed from behind the net by classmate
Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ/New Jersey Rockets).
The visitors drew even at 6:59, when Nicole Gass (Cookshire Eaton, PQ/Ontario Hockey Academy) got loose in the right circle and beat RPI freshman netminder
Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien), inside the right post for her third of the season.
Zafuto then gave Colgate its first lead (2-1) at 10:43 of the opening stanza finishing off an assist from Zalewski.
The Engineers tied the game 7:29 into the second period, when sophomore
Shayna Tomlinson (Gilford, NH/St. Paul's School/Assabet Valley) scored on a tip in front of goal. Assists went to seniors
Jenn Godin (New London, NH/Tabor Academy) and
Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburgh, PA/Washington Pride).
Junior
Laura Horwood (Belleville, ON/Burham West Lightning) gave the hosts a brief 3-2 lead at 13:33 of the second, but Kayla Haus (Kasliof, AK/NAHA) answered with the tying goal less than a minute later.
Selander finished with 24 shots, while Colgate freshman Julia Vandyk (Cambridge, ON/Cambridge Rivulettes) had 21 at the other end of the ice.
POWER BACK ON:
RPI picked up a power play goal against the Raiders and wound up 1 for 5 on the man advantage.
