GLASSBORO, N.J. - Senior
Ben Fazio finished second and sophomore
Grant O'Connor was third to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's cross country team to a second place finish at the NCAA Atlantic Regional and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday, November 19 at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
Fazio, a two-time National All-America, ran the 8K course in a 4:54 pace for a total time of 24:20.5, which was just five seconds from the winner, Isaac Garcia-Cassani of SUNY Geneseo (24:15.8). O'Connor was three seconds behind Fazio for a third place finish in 24:23.6, a 4:55 pace. He was four seconds in front of the fourth place finisher.
Rensselaer sophomore
Sean O'Connor was third on the team and 14th overall with a time of 24:50.5 with senior
Garrett Davis 19 places behind in 33rd in 25:13.0. Junior
Matthew Stewart rounded out RPI's scoring with a 35th place finish (25:14.8), followed by senior
Matthew Cicciu (25:27.0) and
Brian Crowley (26:21.0).
Fazio, both O'Connors, Davis and Stewart all earned All-Region based on their place of finish. There were 303 runners from 49 schools in the regional.
Geneseo, the second ranked team in the nation, finished first with 51 points, followed by RPI's 87. The Engineers, who last participated in the national meet in 1996, are ninth in the latest Division III coaches poll. The College of New Jersey, which is unranked, was third (169) with No. 20 New York University in fourth (171) and No. 31 SUNY Oneonta in fifth (176).
Spalding University and the Louisville Sports Commission are hosting the championship with the men's race beginning at noon.
